4UK ABDUCTION

ENFIELD -- Stephen Clementson writes, "Enfield is not too far away from here, and the sighting logic fits with the general scheme regarding the BBC. They used night-sight equipment to video strange crop circle activity near Winchester, back in 1991." They felt that it was too politically sensitive to broadcast, so they switched to a negative stance. In other words, they knew all about this weird stuff before I had investigated the area. Then, in 1992, I found it for myself, complete with UFOs. I've got news for the BBC...I'm not screaming with fear at the prospect of meeting alien entities. My wife is an abductee, complete with body marks. BBC has returned to a 1940s-style method of UFO denial, inclusive of the suggestion--although they is careful not to make the assertion--that abductees have bizarre mental health abnormalities. In other words, they are suggesting that abductees are a bit on the nutty side. The BBC are being careful to omit any contradictory evidence, such as, or similar to, the painful scoop marks on my wife's ankle.

4ALIEN ABDUCTION REPORTS ARE RISING
By Amy Wilson Herald-leader Staff Writer

A few quick questions: Have you seen beams of light come into your room through a window? Have you ever woken up startled? Do you have chronic sinusitis? Do you have to sleep against a wall? Ever been afraid of your closet? Have ringing in your ears? A fear of doctors? Had the feeling you were going crazy? Are you aware of the cosmos, interested in ecology, the environment, vegetarianism?

Did you answer "yes" to one or more? The good news is, welcome to the club. The bad news is, according to a study conducted in 2002 by the Roper Center for Public Opinion, these are a few of 58 positive indicators that you might be one of the 3.7 million Americans who say they have been abducted by aliens.

Even better news? There's about to be a bunch more of you. It seems that you can Google "alien abduction," read big books, do extensive research and still come up with one conclusion: The more TV you watch, the more knowledge you have of the appearance and behavior of abducting aliens. And the more knowledge you have, the more likely you are to be abducted.

Or think you've been abducted. Or are willing to try to convince the rest of us that you've been abducted, experimented on, had your eyes pulled out, your private parts probed and your nose implanted with some kind of thing that only the aliens can find on careful review.

So with the loyal sci-fi audience success of the new alien-themed dramas Threshold on CBS and Invasion on ABC -- last week, they netted 6 million and 3 million viewers, respectively -- the aliens might be coming soon to a back road, bedroom or bus station near you.

Ever since 1966, when Betty and Barney Hill first went public with a tale of aliens sampling their DNA, there has been a virtual epidemic of alien takings. The abduction of the Hills made big news at the time. In 1961, the couple had reported only seeing bright lights. But in 1966, when they went to a hypnotist, Betty revealed her brave endurance of a painful nose probe and, as if that weren't enough, she gave researchers a star map she'd glimpsed while aboard the ship.

Barney was a little less specific under hypnosis. So the practitioners asked him to draw a picture of his abductors. He did: big bald head, little slanty black eyes, no mouth, skinny. Today, it's a kind of prototype of creatures known by alien experts as "grays." Thing is, Barney's description was exactly what the aliens had looked like on an episode of The Outer Limits. That episode, "The Bellaro Shield," had aired a little more than a week before Barney drew his picture.

Many believers
According to the Roper poll -- which, it should be noted, was conducted for the Sci-Fi Channel -- "two-thirds of Americans say they think there are other forms of intelligent life in the universe, and nearly half say they think UFOs have visited the earth in some form or that aliens have monitored life on earth. In fact, more than one in three believed that humans have interacted with extraterrestrial life forms."

As to alien kidnappings and probings, "one in five Americans say that abductions have taken place." And among those who believe in abductions, one-third claim to have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, a close encounter. Elizabeth Loftus, the much-acclaimed psychologist at the University of California-Irvine who successfully debunked the theory of repressed memory, said television "gives visual plausibility to an abduction explanation" for any number of things -- nightmares, moles on our skin, loneliness, sexual abnormalities. People simply want to understand why they are experiencing some abnormal, frightening or confusing things.

In the 1980s, those same symptoms were typically explained away as "suddenly remembered sexual abuse," she said. It depended, she said, on which kind of therapist was consulted. "If you were steered to a satanic therapist, it was Satan doing it," she said. "If you went to an alien-abduction therapist, it was the aliens. If you went to a therapist who believed everything stemmed from forgotten child or sexual abuse, bingo, that was it."

Loftus, who has served as an expert witness on many such cases, has proved in the laboratory that such memories can be implanted. The problem in those cases, she says, is that there is no evidence that any of that -- the alien abduction, the sexual abuse, the satanic visitation -- ever occurred. (No doubt, she said, tragic and horrible sexual abuse does occur, but rather than being repressed, it is vividly remembered. The kind that needs to be "suggested" to a patient is something else altogether.)

Susan Clancy, a psychologist at Harvard University, agreed. In her just-published book, Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens, Clancy postulates that increased claims of abduction are "false memories," which are not the same as lies. They are created explanations, maybe even a part "of a larger spiritual quest," she said. "They're looking for answers to something bigger. They are looking for a meaning they don't get from science."

And where do they get the palette?
In the 1950s and '60s, Clancy said, aliens were represented in movies as robots or serpents, but the Outer Limits-Barney Hill drawing won the day. That's who people see. That's who they expect to see. "Today," Clancy said, "my 2-year-old, who can't tell you the difference between a dog and a cat, can pick out the right alien. TV taught her that."

Eerie coincidences
So where does this leave the famous Stanford, Ky., abduction case -- which many believers cite as the one that can't be explained away -- nearly 30 years after its original telling?

On Jan. 6, 1976, Mona Stafford, Louise Smith and Elaine Thomas, three ordinary rural Kentucky women, reported that they had been driving on U.S. 27, 35 miles from Liberty, their hometown, when their car came under the control of outside forces, they said. A glowing laser-like beam sucked them off the road. Then things kind of went blank. When the women came to, they said, they found themselves in the car -- but all were missing about 90 minutes of their memories. They called the police the next day. Their story was in all the papers. Polygraphed, they were unshakable.

Coincidentally, The UFO Incident, an NBC-TV movie starring James Earl Jones as Barney Hill and Estelle Parsons as Betty, was first shown Oct. 20, 1975, just 10 weeks before the eerie episode on U.S. 27. In fact, the number of reported UFO abductions after that television movie aired simply mushroomed.

Also, the National Enquirer tabloid had offered a cash prize of $100,000 for definitive proof of extraterrestrial life, but in 1976, the year of the U.S. 27 incident, the prize was bumped to $1 million. In the decade before 1975, there had been 50 abduction-type reports -- about five a year. From 1976 to 1978, the rate was about 50 a year.

Still, the Kentucky case remained famous because the women -- two are now dead and one moved west, where she could talk about the experience and not be ridiculed, she said -- stuck to their story. The academic who hypnotized them and the Lexington police lieutenant who polygraphed the trio are both dead. The Mutual UFO Network investigator who interviewed them is likewise unreachable.

Abduction reports tend to come in waves, almost as if they are the fashion. Why? Because socially, the experience has no downside. Unlike people who are sexually abused or who are victims of satanic rituals, alien abductees tend to be proud and talkative about the experiences. It makes them special.

It has done something else, Harvard's Clancy said. Three good decades of TV and movies have made aliens less scary than, say, terrorists. So we embrace them, especially now. ABC and NBC, the networks behind Invasion and Threshold, are counting on it.

4CARIBBEAN SEA T-33s CHASE UFO

WEST INDIES -- A formerly classified Air Intelligence Information Report #112 states: During the period 9 through 13 March 1958, three unexplainable radar contacts were made by equipment located in the West Indies. (Probably at Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico .GF) according to recently released Air Force Documents.

On two occasions, aircraft were vectored into the area the radar sites, with negative results.

Interrogation of the scope operators has indicated that returns were strong and easily distinguished from cloud formations. Returns were definite when associated with clouds. Generally the tracks were triangular with speed of movement very erratic. Movement appears at times to evasive action.

The incident of 9/10 March was tracked by gun laying radar. During the period of observation, radar maintenance personnel checked out the system completely. In addition, a lock was broken, however, this equipment immediately picked up target and locked on. A second tracking radar situated on Tobaga Island, locked on the return. Target generally remained in same area half way between the radar sites.

Personnel stationed at sites reported seeing red and green lights but no noise was associated with the lights. Visibility was good. A commercial flight volunteered to investigate target and was vectored to a hundred yards of the target, but reported negative sighting.

Target faded out at 0208 R on 10 March. At 10:12 search radar reported unidentified target and a T-33 jet was sent to investigate with negative results despite being in the immediate area of the targets. Contact was lost at 14:15R. Air Intelligence Information Report 112. Thanks to investigator Henry Schuren.

Editors Note: Numerous reports have been received from Puerto Rico and Venezuela with UFOs reported diving and exiting the Caribbean Sea. The T-33 that I flew with a max speed of 600 mph is often considered the most widely used jet trainer in the world.

4IF IT ISN'T AURORA - WHAT IS IT?

[Image: http://www.nationalufocenter.com/artman/uploads/usmapaurora.jpg]

Geoff Richardson writes, "A recent weather satellite photograph shows the contrail of an aircraft leaving Area 51 in Nevada and progressing eastwards across the U.S., over the Atlantic and onward over Europe to Russia and China." Whatever the aircraft is, it is certainly capable of speeds of 8,000 m.p.h. plus – (calculations based on the distance and times of the satellite photographs show this.) Perhaps, despite the previous non-existence of any evidence which supported the existence of "Aurora", the satellite photographs do prove that an aircraft with incredible capabilities does exist and it is based in Area 51.

4OLDEST CIVILIZATION MAY BE IN ANTARCTICA
by Vladimir Averianov

[Image: http://www.ufodigest.com/images/antarctica.jpg Caption: Lots of surprises may be hidden under the Antarctic ice and are waiting to be discovered by humans]

The existence of the civilization in Antarctica started drawing attention of professional historians after the World War II. The hypothesis can be proven by medieval maps and the research of Western paleogeologists and glaciologists.

In January 1820 the lieutenant of the Russian Imperial Fleet Mikhail Lazarev discovered a new continent. At the beginning of the 20th century famous Russian Brockhaus and Efron encyclopedic dictionary contained an article, according to which the continent was insufficiently and that there were no flora and fauna. Besides, the author mentioned the variety of seaweeds and sea animals that inhabited the Antarctic waters.

[Image: http://www.ufodigest.com/images/piri.jpg Caption: The Piri Reis Map]

About twenty years later the head of the Istanbul National Museum Halil Edhem found an old map while revising the library of Byzantine emperors in the old sultans palace. The author of the map depicted the Western coast of Africa, the Southern coast of South America and the Northern coast of Antarctica. Halil was astonished. The ice edge of the Queen Maud Land south of 70th parallel was free of ice. The author mapped a mountain chain at this point. The name of the cartographer was well known to Edhem. It was the admiral of Ottoman Empire Fleet Piri Reis, who lived in the first half of the 16th century. In 1949 the joint British-Swedish expedition conducted a thorough seismic exploration of the southernmost continent through the thick ice. The results coincided with the map of Reis. However, it was a mystery how the map data were to agree with the level of science of 1513.

Piri Reis himself explained on the margins of the map that it was based on previous sources, some of which belonged to his contemporaries, while others could be dated with as early as the 4th century B.C. One of the sources, for instance, belonged to Alexander the Great. Thus Reis could not be made responsible for the data presented on the map.

Medieval maps show Antarctica without ice cover or partly covered with ice. The accuracy of maps of the 16th century is incredible. In terms of the technical means their data can be compared with those of the end of the 18th century and sometimes with those of the 20th century.

According to the Reis' map the coastal edge of the continent is not covered with ice. Oronteus Finius's map that was composed 18 years later shows a plateau around the South Pole within the 80th and sometimes 75th parallels. 200 years later academician Buache depicted Antarctica without the ice.

In 1949 the Admiral Richard E. Byrd's expedition was drilling the Ross Sea bottom approximately in those places where Finius marked the riverbeds. The cores contained fine-grained rocks, well-mixed deposits, brought into the sea by the rivers, the heads of which are located in the middle latitudes (i.e. not covered with ice).

Scientists of Carnegie Institute of Washington managed to establish precisely that Antarctic rivers that contained these deposits were flowing about 6000 years ago. Only after that, about 4000 B.C. the ice began accumulating at the bottom of the sea. This fact was preceded by a long period of warmth.

As a result, the maps mentioned above depict Antarctica of the period when Egyptian and Sumerian civilizations were born. Most of the historians disclaim this point of view.

However, there is a hypothesis that between the fifth and the tenth millenniums B.C. a human civilization lived on the planet. It possessed great knowledge in navigation, cartography, astronomy, the level of which was not lower then of that of the 18th century.

This civilization was rather a predecessor of the ours than a product created by aliens. Its age could be several millenniums. It was probably located on the northern coast of the southernmost continent or the archipelago of large islands - that was Antarctica that had a moderate climate at that time. Later it could occupy the northeast of the African continent.

The civilization could have disappeared because of the icing up of the southern land that began not earlier than in the tenth millennium B.C. Another possible reason could be large inundations that led to long-lasting local floods, which are not disclaimed by archaeologists. Such natural disasters could destroy almost the whole material culture of the protocivilization. It can be possible that some part of it is covered with thick Antarctic ice. Another possibility is that some of the representatives of this protocivilization could have survived. In this case they could have pass their knowledge to Egyptians and Sumerians.

Humans cannot but hope that further archaeological research will solve the mysteries of the southernmost continent. There could be lots of surprises hidden here.

4ANCIENT PYRAMID FOUND IN BOSNIA

A stone pyramid "of monumental size" has been discovered in Bosnia and is believed to date back to 14,000 B.C. Near the city of Visoko, 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Sarajevo, there is a stone pyramid of monumental size, claims Bosnian archaeologist Semir Osmanagic, who lives and works in the USA.

"After several months of geological and archaeological research, Dr. Osmanagic concluded that, under the present hill of Visochica, hides a step-pyramid, about 12,000 years ago. Dr. Osmanagic, who has done extensive research on pyramids in the Americas, Asia and Africa for the past 15 years and who has written several books on the subject, says he's quite sure he's found the first pyramid in Europe, which he claims is quite similar to the ones in Central and South America."

"He believes that the project would completely change Bosnia's significance in the world of archaeology."

"On top of the 'Bosnian pyramid of the Sun' was a temple, built by the pre-Illyrians, people who lived in the area, according to Dr. Osmanagic, about 27,000 years ago."

"This predates the Hyborian Age, or Age of Conan, by a good 17,000 years,' Aimee Kokotovic, UFO Roundup correspondent in the Balkans, commented, "It's possible that this pyramid was built by the mysterious and occult empire of Acheron, which, according to the American author Robert Howard, flourished during this period."

(Editor's Note: Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was the American fantasy author who wrote the Conan saga. The lost empire of Acheron appears in many Conan stories but most prominently in REH's one full-length Conan novel, "The Hour of the Dragon.")

"Dr, Osmanagic thinks he will solve the 'secret of the Bosnian pyramid of the Sun' within the next five years. He also believes that a second pyramid, 'the Pyramid of the Moon,' exists beneath the neighboring hill of Kriza."

"The (Visochica) pyramid is 100 meters high, and there is evidence that it contains rooms and a monumental causeway...The plateau is built of stone blocks, which indicates the presence at the time of a highly developed civilization."

"Archaeological excavations near the surface have uncovered a part of a wall and the fragments of steps."

"Visochica Hill could not have been shaped like this by nature,' Bosnian geologist Nada Nukic said, 'This is already far more than we had anticipated. We expect a lot more data from further analysis at the site,' she said." (See the Bosnian newspaper Dnevni Avaz for October 26, 2005, "Pyramid found-in the heart of Bosnia!" Many thanks to Aimee Kokotovic for this newspaper article.)

4ASTEROID APOPHIS 500 METERS IN DIAMETER TO RAM INTO EARTH IN 2029?
11/16/2005

Asteroid MN4 otherwise known as Apophis has been designated the most dangerous heavenly body of the century. On April 13th, 2029, the asteroid may crush into Earth causing an explosion 100 times bigger than the blast of the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. A large part of Moscow is likely to disappear.

Apophis was discovered by Steve Chesley at NASA in June 2004. He stirred up a lot a buzz among his colleagues by saying that the thing is definitely going to ram into Earth. The colleagues rushed to telescopes and checked the photographs of the celestial sky. They found the asteroid on a photograph taken back in March.

The diameter of MN4 was initially measured at 500 meters. Researchers reduced the diameter to 320 meters after conducting a series of additional calculations. The asteroid rotates once in every 323 days, it crosses Earth's orbit twice a year. There is a real threat of collision, but it is not so deadly as previously thought. The asteroid will not be smashing our planet on April 13th, 2029. But it is expected to cross the sky in a really close vicinity to Earth. It might as well destroy a communications satellite.

NASA comet photo gallery
http://www1.newsteam.ru/reports/index.html?4,247,11

Things may turn for the worse after the near-miss experience. It is not yet clear what will happen after the dangerous rendezvous. Some astronomers believe the earth's gravitation is capable of diverting the flight path of the asteroid. What direction will it take? Specialists are still busy trying to guesswork the year of a potential disaster: 2035, 2036 or 2037. They release scary estimates saying that the whole Northern Hemisphere may be under threat. The end of the world is out of question though densely populated areas would sustain heavy casualties. An area of 40 square kilometers would lay waste.

What should be done to protect our planet? Specialists consider two options at the moment. One involves demolition of the asteroid, the other one is to push it aside. Pushing the monster aside is less dangerous than an explosion producing thousands of fragments with unpredictable flight patterns. Where will those fragments fly to?

NASA astronauts Edward Lu and Stanley Love recently came up with an idea of pushing it aside by using a heavy spaceship. The ship should be heavy enough, from 20 tons to 30 tons. It would spin around Apophis. The asteroid's trajectory would be deflected by the ship's gravitational effects.

In the meantime, scientists are going to take a closer look at the dangerous heavenly bodies. European Space Agency is planning to launch a spacecraft which expected to land on asteroids to collect necessary data and images. Astronomers will be able to see the space rocks coming closer to Earth.

4HORSE MUTILATIONS FEARED IN CALHAN, COLORADO

"Folks in this close-knit community on the eastern plains" of Colorado "are baffled and worried about two mysterious incidents in which 22 horses and a burro were found dead."

"The rural residents in" Calhan, Colorado "are pretty level-headed people, and they scoff at the notion that UFOs might be responsible. But many were around when a spate of unsolved cattle mutilations occurred in the 1970s and again in the early 1990s, and they're willing to entertain the notion-maybe with a little tongue in cheek-that cults, creeps and 'black helicopter' people might be to blame."

"'There's strange stuff going on,' Terry Ashcroft said Monday," October 24, 2005, while doing some business at the Pikes Peak Co-op in Calhan."

"Ashcroft, who lives 19 miles east of town, remembers driving a farm truck down a dark rural road 15 years ago at harvest time and 'running off' a helicopter in a field where cattle were later found mutilated."

"'It's all speculative at this point, but I wouldn't rule out a cult being reactivated like 15 years ago,' he said."

"The veterinarian investigating the deaths of the animals, John Heikkila, fielded lots of questions from worried stockmen Monday as he performed state-required inspections of animals at the weekly Calhan livestock auction."

"The tall, burly Montanan (citizen of the USA's western state of Montana-J.T.), who has cared for animals in the area for years, said he's pretty certain the 16 horses found dead Saturday," October 22, 2005, "in rancher William DeWitt's pasture were killed by lightning. All of the horses were found lying within 50 yards (45 meters) of one another, including one found still perched on its knees, snout to the ground."

"But Heikkila said he's willing to entertain even farfetched ideas about the deaths of six horses and a burro owned by rancher Ned Sixkiller."

"'I've got so little clues on Ned's land, it just might be UFOs,' he said with a laugh."

"Sixkiller found his animals dead on (Tuesday) October 11 (2005), less than two miles from where the 16 horses were found Saturday."

"Heikkila performed autopsies on Sixkiller's animals and found perfectly round puncture wounds in their hides and skulls, about the size of .22-caliber bullets. But the wounds were no more than three-quarters of an inch (1.75 centimeters) deep, and exams and X-rays revealed no bullet fragments or slugs in the carcasses."

"The vet said a first round of tests for poisons and for a feed additive for cattle that is deadly to horses have come back negative. He said he's waiting for further tests that might reveal why the blood on sixkiller's animals didn't clot, which he said would be expected."

"If that test doesn't solve the mystery, he said, a definitive cause of the animals' deaths might never be known."

"'Ned's was not a case of lightning,' Heikkila said, 'In real life, there are a lot of incidents where we just don't know.'"

"Still, Heikkila knows folks in the Calhan area are suspicious about the mysterious deaths happening so close in time and distance to one another. When he walked into the pasture Saturday and saw the 16 horses lying dead, he was, too."

"'When I first saw all those dead animals, I about wanted to puke myself,' he said, 'I came in with a biased opinion. I went looking for puncture wounds like I found on Ned's animals. It took me a lot of time working through the problems, but I don't think they're related.'"

"He said the horses did not show signs of being burned by lightning, but he said that's not unusual. But he did find some other classic signs they had been hit by lightning, signs he didn't find in the six animals owned by Sixkiller."

"Among them: The eyeballs in many of the animals had literally been exploded; the tissue had essentially melted away in the three to seven days that passed between death and discovery; and the horses had not been disturbed by scavengers, which avoid the flesh of animals killed by lightning."

"The vet said it's unusual for so many animals to be killed all at once by lightning, but he said it isn't impossible. He said the horses were in a pasture that had a lot of moisture, and a couple were found entangled in wire fencing that can conduct lightning."

"Ralph Lewis, who was herding cattle through the auction pens from atop his horse Monday, doesn't know what to make of the deaths."

"He owns 30 to 40 horses near where the dead animals were found, and he plans to move his most valuable horses to a friend's pasture where they can be watched."

"'Nothing makes sense about it,' he said, 'It could be lightning, but it seems strange. We haven't had that much lightning. And I've had cattle killed by poisonous weeds, but they don't all die in the same spot.'"

"'Personally, I think somebody did something to them. I'll tell you what, if I caught someone doing something to my horses, it wouldn't be good. That's my livelihood.'"

"Clare Loughrey, who stepped into the co-op to get some supplies Monday, agreed."

"Loughrey said she can understand how lightning killed the 16 horses; she's seen up to eight cattle killed by one strike."

"But those deaths-or the six others days earlier-had better not be caused by cults or methamphetamine addicts that folks around here say have moved to the plains in increasing numbers, she said."

"'If somebody is pulling a sick prank, we're not going to stand for it,' Loughrey said, 'We all love our horses.'" (See the Colorado Springs Gazette for October 25, 2005, "Ranchers worry about horses." Many thanks to Mary Lou Jones-Drown for this newspaper article.)

4ARGENTINA WATER TANKS EMPTIED

"LA CABAÑA" RANCH -- CIUFOS-La Pampa (Raul Oscar Chaves) reports, "In the early morning hours of October 31, 2005, a 70,000 liters tank of water used to provide liquid to livestock was found to be missing.

Miguel Garrone, who leases the "La Cabaña" ranch, says that the tank was filled to the maximum on Saturday evening and was found completely empty in the early morning hours of Monday. There were no signs of breakage, leakage, nor signs of moisture in its perimeter that could provide an answer to the mysterious disappearance.

The astonished livestock rancher indicated that this is not the first time tanks have been emptied. The ranch is located some 15 km south of Parera, La Pampa. On July 2, 2005, in a ranch belonging some 4 km from Quetrequén another 70,000 liters of water vanished in a similar fashion. Mutilated animals were also found in this area in this region.

[Editor's Note: One of the most startling aspects of the 2002 cattle mutilation wave in Argentina was the disappearance of tremendous amounts of water from the large cisterns known as "tanques australianos" (literally, Australian tanks). Entire swimming pools were drained. Psychic Silvia Browne, a guest on TV's Montel Williams Show said, a US swimming pool was drained "by UFOs".- SC]

4LARGE LIVESTOCK TANK MYSTERIOUSLY DRAINED OF WATER IN ARGENTINA

"In the early morning hours of (Monday) October 31, 2005," approximately "70,000 liters of water were found to be missing from a tank habitually employed to provide livestock with water." The bizarre incident took place on a ranch located 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of Parera in central Argentina's La Pampa province, just off Provincial Route 9. According to ufologist Scott Corrales, "One of the most startling aspects of the 2002 cattle mutilation wave in Argentina was the disappearance of tremendous amounts of water from large cisterns known as 'tanques australianos' (literally, 'Australian tanks'-S.C.) in Argentina's cattle ranching communities. Entire swimming pools were drained empty in Santa Rosa, Argentina at the same time."

"Miguel Garrone, who leases the La Cabana ranch, says the tank was filled to the maximum on Saturday evening," October 29, 2005, "and was found completely empty in the early morning hours of Monday," October 31, 2005. "No signs of breakage or filtration were found, not signs of moisture in the perimeter that could provide an answer to such a strange phenomenon. The livestock rancher indicated his astonishment, stressing that this is not the first time that such an event has occurred in the area."

"It is worth noting that on July 2, 2006, on a ranch belonging to Adolfo Ziegenfhus, some 4 kilometers (1.3 miles) from Quetrequen and 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Parera, another 70,000 liters of water vanished in a similar fashion-mysteriously and at night-without any trace ever being detected, not the existence of a leak or filtration that would justify the missing water ever being found." (Muchas gracias a Scott Corrales y Raul Oscar Chavez de CIUFOS-La Pampa para estas noticias.)

4SWISS SCIENTIST EXPECTS PRIONS IN MILK OF INFECTED ANIMALS
By Jeff Rense - 11-05-05

Note - As Dr. Doyle and I have been saying for getting on toward ten years now, there is no reason to assume prions are NOT in the milk of infected dairy cattle or any other TSE-stricken animals.

As is now clearly documented, during the early years of the mad cow catastrophe in the UK, the British government continued to lie and deceive its people in claiming that prions were somehow (magically) restricted to the brains of infected cows.

That lie was then morphed into claims and guarantees that prions could only be found in the brains AND spinal columns of mad cows. I argued that the authorities were clearly lying ... that proteins would never so restrict themselves and could be - and would be - found throughout an infected animal's body ... carried via the blood circulatory system. That, of course, has now proven to be true.

British health officials kept changing their deadly deception until they were subsequently forced to modify their story, and slowly admitted that prions could be found in the bones (but not the meat of infected cattle).

Then came an admission that prions had been found in the tongues of infected animals. Next it was the tonsils...and then finally - after several years - came the official admission that prions are, indeed, present in the meat/muscle of mad cows.

4MYSTERY PLAGUE KILLS HUNDREDS OF COWS IN INDIA

"About 171 cows have died in the past ten days, for unknown medical reasons, in Raydan Talavdi village in Ajwatalaku" in southern India. "Cattle owners and veterinary doctors fear the deaths could have taken place due to the spread of a dangerous epidemic in the village."

"A large number of families, mostly shepherds, are involved in the dairy business in the village and own about 960 cows and water buffaloes."

"'Surprisingly, a bovine has been perishing at the rate of one per day for the past ten days. On the first day, about five cows died. The cows first vomited blood, then fainted and died,' said Vijay Bharwad, president of the Raydan Talavdi Milk Production Committee, which supplies milk to the Baroda Dairy."

"On Wednesday, November 9, 2005, four more cows were reported dead. Three camels and four water buffaloes have also died in the village."

"'Since the number of dead cattle is so large, it has been difficult to dispose of the carcasses,' Mr. Bharwad explained, 'Stray dogs have also died after eating the dead cattle. Maybe some dangerous epidemic has struck the village.'"

"Veterinarians hired by the Baroda Dairy have been unable to ascertain the reason behind the sudden rash of cattle deaths."

Authorities in Ghandinagar, the district capital, have sent three teams of doctors to Ajwatalaku to identify the cause of the malady.

The mystery ailment then turned up in Usilampatti, another prime dairy region. On Thursday, November 17, 2005, a herd of cows "taken for grazing at Rengasamipatti and Ammamuthu were found dead. Farmers say that the cows start shivering and, within a few minutes, die." Dairy farming is "carried out on a large scale in Usilampatti. The straw and grass from the fields serves as fodder for the milch animals. These animals also ensure a steady income for (Indian) farmers from the sale of milk."

"The farmers have appealed to authorities to find out the cause for the sudden death of their milch animals and also seek preventive measures." (See the New Indian Press for November 18, 2005 and the Asian Age for November 13, 2005. Many thanks to Krishnari Bai Dharapurnanda for these newspaper articles.)

4CRAZY CROC APPEARS IN RHODESVILLE, ALABAMA

The USA's "crazy croc" flap continued last week with another out-of-place alligator getting captured in Rhodesville, Alabama. "Farmer Johnny Clemmons was surprised when a friend spotted a 5-foot (1.5-meter) alligator at his cow farm in Rhodesville. It's believed to be the first alligator ever captured in Lauderdale County. Clemmons suspects the reptile likely moved to the farm from a nearby swamp that dried up recently."

"Crazy crocs" or the "crazy croc syndrome" is one of the longest-running phenomena in Forteana. It consists of the sudden appearance of alligators or crocodiles in areas far from their natural habitat.

Lauderdale County is in northern Alabama, just below the Tennessee state line, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) west-northwest of Huntsville. (See USA Today for November 10, 2005, "Across the USA: Alabama," page 8A.)

4NEW SPECIES OF PLESIOSAUR DISCOVERED

"No need to sound the alarms in Tokyo. This fearsome reptile has been extinct for millions of years. The recently-discovered crocodile-like creature dubbed 'Godzilla' is causing some excitement-but not among Japanese Defense Forces."

"'It's an entirely new species, so that's exciting,' said Museum of Science program manager Lynn Baum. 'They often attach names like that. We like to make familiar connections to something new.'"

"Given the scientific name Dakosaurus andiniensis, the 13-foot (4-meter) Jurassic reptile is not classified as a dinosaur because of its watery habitat, four paddle- like limbs and a vertically-oriented fishlike tail."

"'I don't think they're saying it's a missing link between dinosaurs and crocodiles, they're suggesting that it is more related to the largest species of Plesiosaurus. This was clearly a good, lethal killer,' Baum said."

"The Dakosaurus was not a fish, either, as scientists say it would have regularly surfaced to gasp oxygen and then would dive into the ocean."

"Recent Dakosaurus research comes from a complete skull found in Argentina in 1996, studied by Diego Pol of Ohio State University, Zulma Gasparini of Argentina's National University of La Plata, and their colleagues."

(Editor's Note: During the Jurassic Period, the Andes mountains of South America were the floor of a shallow sea.)

4TORNADOES' "SECOND SEASON" PUZZLES SCIENTISTS

Three powerful tornadoes ravaged the USA's Midwest region, prompting scientists to wonder if an unprecedented "second tornado season" has opened. In the USA, "tornado season' customarily runs from April 1 until July 31. Late-season tornadoes are rare but not completely unknown. Oklahoma suffers the most tornadoes of any American state and is considered the heart of "Tornado Alley."

On Sunday, November 6, 2005, "the deadliest tornado to strike Indiana in 31 years killed 22 people, most of them sleeping in a mobile home park near Evansville (population 121,582) that took a direct hit. The twister hit with little warning at about 2 a.m. and destroyed hundreds of homes, businesses and churches along a 20-mile (32-kilometer) path on both sides of the Ohio River. About 200 people were injured." ...

"The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 1:46 a.m. The Evansville emergency agency activated its 20 radio-controlled sirens, including one just west of the Eastbrook Mobile Home Park, three minutes later," according to Lt. John Strange of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department. The tornado was Indiana's deadliest since April 3, 1974, when several twisters killed 47 people." ...

One week later, on Saturday, November 12, 2005, "Tornadoes swept across central Iowa, damaging homes in several towns, ripping up farms and chasing college football fans from an open stadium and into a nearby basketball arena for shelter. No injuries were immediately reported, but authorities last night were evacuating Stratford (Iowa), a town of about 746 residents" approximately "23 miles (37 kilometers) northwest of Ames (population 50,731)." ...

On Tuesday, November 15, 2005, "tornadoes and severe thunderstorms battered parts of Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, killing one person and injuring dozens of others." ...

Tornadoes were also reported in southern and central Indiana, just "nine days after a deadly tornado in the Evansville area killed 22 people." American scientists are baffled by the recent flurry of unseasonable tornadoes.

"Indiana is part of a swath of Midwestern states, sometimes called 'Tornado Alley' that is frequently hit by twisters. But the Evansville area is not in a part of Indiana that is particularly prone to tornadoes, said Wayne Hart, chief meteorologist at WEHT-TV in Evansville. And when they come, the tornadoes usually hit in the spring."

4MARS METHANE MAY BE BIOGENIC LIFE

This Hubble image is the sharpest view of Mars ever taken from Earth – the Martian north pole is at the top, near the centre of the bright polar cap (Image: JPL)

New observations of the Martian atmosphere show no trace of sulphurous fumes and rules out active volcanoes as the source of the Red Planet's mysterious methane, but fails to resolve the question of where the methane comes from. Methane breaks down when exposed to sunlight, so its discovery in the Martian atmosphere two years ago meant that something on the planet was continually producing more of the gas. Most astronomers suspected its presence was the result of a geological process, while a few suggested the methane was the signature of past or present life. To try to narrow the range of possibilities, Vladimir Krasnopolsky, who studies planetary atmospheres at the Catholic University of America in Washington, turned a powerful infrared spectrometer towards Mars. He targeted sulphur dioxide – the volcanic gas that should be easiest to spot.

Earth’s volcanoes release methane, but they generate thousands of times more sulphur dioxide, which has an even shorter atmospheric lifetime than methane – just two years. So finding sulphur dioxide would mean volcanic vents on Mars were actively releasing the gas, and presumably methane as well. However, high-resolution measurements revealed no trace of Martian sulphur dioxide. From that, Krasnopolsky calculated that Mars’ atmosphere could contain no more than one part per billion of the gas. This in turn means that Martian volcanoes can be releasing no more than one seven-hundredth as much sulphur dioxide as terrestrial volcanoes – and far too little methane to sustain the levels recorded in the Martian atmosphere.

I can't rule out a geological source of methane" because there are many conceivable mechanisms, Krasnopolsky told New Scientist, but "this makes biological methane more plausible". "You want to resort to biogenic sources as the last possible alternative," Lyons told New Scientist, noting that methane fluxes on Mars are six to seven orders of magnitude smaller than on the Earth, which possesses an abundance of organic-origin methane.

4PATENT GRANTED FOR ANTIGRAVITY DEVICE

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has given the nod to a patent design for an antigravity device, or a space vehicle, according to a report this week in Nature magazine.

That the office approved the patent application breaks its own resolution to reject inventions that defy the laws of physics, according to the report. Still, the patent, which was granted on Nov. 1 to Boris Volfson of Huntington, Indiana, describes a vehicle propelled by a superconducting shield. The shield can change the curvature of space-time outside the craft in a way that counteracts gravity.

Watchdogs called the science bogus, however. "This is not the first such patent to be granted, but it shows that patent examiners are being duped by false science," Robert Park of the American Physical Society in Washington DC said in the report.

At a first glance, this would seem to be based on the Biefeld-Brown effect, which was discovered by Nikola Tesla at the turn of the 20th century and rediscovered in the 1930s by scientist T. Townsend Brown. The effect has been confirmed many times over and over again.

The Biefeld-Brown effect is real and there are many patents for Biefeld-Brown engines, most of which have been built and they worked. The effect itself is not in dispute. The problem is that it requires large amounts of electricity. If you supply the energy from outside, e.g.. via electrical cable, then the device can only move as far as your cable is long. Not very useful. If you want to put the electricity generator on the device itself, it becomes too heavy to lift off.

You can build a simple Biefeld-Brown engine at home and test this for yourself. They can be made from a wireframe attached by a cable to a 20.000 Volts DC source and it will shoot up to the ceiling of the room when voltage is applied.

4DOZENS OF UFOs REPORTED OVER WALES
Nov 16 2005 Robin Turner, Western Mail

DOZENS of UFOs that the Ministry of Defense cannot explain have been sighted in Wales in the past three years, the release of confidential papers has revealed. The MoD confirmed that a green, circular object seen hovering in one position over Mumbles in January 2002 was classed as a UFO. And another bright object seen hovering over West Swansea in January of this year is also being put down as a UFO.

However, Julie Monk of the Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Air Staff made it clear a UFO classification simply meant no rational explanation for a sighting could be found, not that it was extra-terrestrial in origin.

MoD figures show 28 reports of UFO sightings in Wales in the past three years cannot be explained. The close encounters include a black object hovering over Rhyl, a flying disc over Newport and a spinning craft with legs spotted in the skies above Rhondda.

The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, show that there were seven sightings in 2002, eight in 2003, four in 2004 and nine so far this year.

Whitehall-based Mrs. Monk said, "The MoD examines any reports of UFOs it receives solely to establish whether what was seen might have some defense significance.

"That is, whether there is any evidence the UK's airspace might have been compromised by an unauthorized aircraft. Unless there is evidence of a potential threat to the UK from some external source, and to date no UFO report has revealed such evidence, we do not attempt to identify the precise nature of each sighting."

Mrs. Monk said rational explanations could be found for such sightings but it would be "an inappropriate use of defense resources" to go into great depth on each report. Instead, a number of the reports are simply classed as UFOs and a database of sightings in Wales has now been built up from 2002 onwards.

Because of the large number of reports before 2002, the MoD says the cost of examining, logging and placing them all on a database would be too expensive.

The MoD holds reports of UFOs in Wales going back 25 years.

Cardiff-based UFO researcher Chris Fowler said, "There are credible sightings of unidentified objects in the sky. Either these are our craft, which means we've got technology far more powerful than the ones most of us know about, or else they're somebody else's. I don't know more than that."

There have been a number of UFO watching groups in Wales including the Welsh Federation of Independent Ufologists. The strangest report given to the federation involved a family traveling by car to the Great Orme on November 10, 1997. They could not account for several "lost" hours when they suddenly became aware of resuming their journey, according to investigator Margaret Fry. She was told of their account by a friend of the family.

Margaret says the couple and their children where driving on the Bodfair/Landernog road when they found their car engulfed by a purple triangular craft. The next thing they remember is the purple craft had gone. She said, "But they could not account for considerable hours of time lost. The father was having trouble afterwards with a top molar tooth and he had to go to the dentist. A black unknown object fell out while he was at the dentist ... but he had no fillings."

There was a raft of "cigar- shaped object" sightings in Pembrokeshire in the 1970s which prompted an RAF inquiry. And in January 1974 there were reports a spacecraft "as big as the Albert Hall" landed in the Berwyn Mountains.

Last year, Alison Moore, 26, took footage of a floating disc in the sky above her Trehafod, Rhondda, home.

Although astronomer Mark Griffiths said "it could have been Venus" he said the incident deserved further investigation.

4FORMER CANADIAN MINISTER OF DEFENSE ASKS CANADIAN PARLIAMENT TO HOLD HEARINGS ON RELATIONS WITH ALIEN "ET" CIVILIZATIONS
Thu Nov 24, 7:00 AM ET

(PRWEB) - OTTAWA, CANADA (PRWEB) November 24, 2005 -- A former Canadian Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister under Pierre Trudeau has joined forces with three Non-governmental organizations to ask the Parliament of Canada to hold public hearings on Exopolitics -- relations with “ETs.”

By “ETs,” Mr. Hellyer and these organizations mean ethical, advanced extraterrestrial civilizations that may now be visiting Earth.

On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canada’s Defense Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head." Mr. Hellyer went on to say, "I'm so concerned about what the consequences might be of starting an intergalactic war, that I just think I had to say something."

Hellyer revealed, "The secrecy involved in all matters pertaining to the Roswell incident was unparalleled. The classification was, from the outset, above top secret, so the vast majority of U.S. officials and politicians, let alone a mere allied minister of defense, were never in-the-loop."

Hellyer warned, "The United States military are preparing weapons which could be used against the aliens, and they could get us into an intergalactic war without us ever having any warning. He stated, "The Bush administration has finally agreed to let the military build a forward base on the moon, which will put them in a better position to keep track of the goings and comings of the visitors from space, and to shoot at them, if they so decide."

Hellyer’s speech ended with a standing ovation. He said, "The time has come to lift the veil of secrecy, and let the truth emerge, so there can be a real and informed debate, about one of the most important problems facing our planet today."

Three Non-governmental organizations took Hellyer’s words to heart, and approached Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, to hold public hearings on a possible ET presence, and what Canada should do. The Canadian Senate, which is an appointed body, has held objective, well-regarded hearings and issued reports on controversial issues such as same-sex marriage and medical marijuana,

On October 20, 2005, the Institute for Cooperation in Space requested Canadian Senator Colin Kenny, Senator, Chair of The Senate Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defense, “schedule public hearings on the Canadian Exopolitics Initiative, so that witnesses such as the Hon. Paul Hellyer, and Canadian-connected high level military-intelligence, NORAD-connected, scientific, and governmental witnesses facilitated by the Disclosure Project and by the Toronto Exopolitics Symposium can present compelling evidence, testimony, and Public Policy recommendations.”

The Non-governmental organizations seeking Parliament hearings include Canada- based Toronto Exopolitics Symposium, which organized the University of Toronto Symposium at which Mr. Hellyer spoke.

The Disclosure Project, a U.S.– based organization that has assembled high level military-intelligence witnesses of a possible ET presence, is also one of the organizations seeking Canadian Parliament hearings.

Vancouver-based Institute for Cooperation in Space (ICIS), whose International Director headed a proposed 1977 Extraterrestrial Communication Study for the White House of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who himself has publicly reported a 1969 Close Encounter of the First Kind with a UFO, filed the original request for Canadian Parliament hearings.

The Canadian Exopolitics Initiative, presented by the organizations to a Senate Committee panel hearing in Winnipeg, Canada, on March 10, 2005, proposes that the Government of Canada undertake a Decade of Contact.

The proposed Decade of Contact is “a 10-year process of formal, funded public education, scientific research, educational curricula development and implementation, strategic planning, community activity, and public outreach concerning our terrestrial society’s full cultural, political, social, legal, and governmental communication and public interest diplomacy with advanced, ethical Off-Planet cultures now visiting Earth.”

Canada has a long history of opposing the basing of weapons in Outer Space. On September 22, 2004 Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin declared to the U.N. General Assembly,” "Space is our final frontier. It has always captured our imagination. What a tragedy it would be if space became one big weapons arsenal and the scene of a new arms race.

Martin stated, "In 1967, the United Nations agreed that weapons of mass destruction must not be based in space. The time has come to extend this ban to all weapons..."

In May, 2003, speaking before the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defense and Veterans Affairs, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Lloyd Axworthy, stated “Washington's offer to Canada is not an invitation to join America under a protective shield, but it presents a global security doctrine that violates Canadian values on many levels."

Axworthy concluded, “There should be an uncompromising commitment to preventing the placement of weapons in space.”

On February 24, 2005, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin made official Canada's decision not to take part in the U.S. government’s Ballistic Missile Defense program.

Paul Hellyer, who now seeks Canadian Parliament hearings on relations with ETs, on May 15, 2003, stated in Toronto’s Globe & Mail newspaper, “Canada should accept the long-standing invitation of U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio to launch a conference to seek approval of an international treaty to ban weapons in space. That would be a positive Canadian contribution toward a more peaceful world.”

In early November 2005, the Canadian Senate wrote ICIS, indicating the Senate Committee could not hold hearings on ETs in 2005, because of their already crowded schedule.

“That does not deter us,” one spokesperson for the Non-governmental organizations said, “We are going ahead with our request to Prime Minister Paul Martin and the official opposition leaders in the House of Commons now, and we will re-apply with the Senate of Canada in early 2006.

“Now is the time for open disclosure that there are ethical Extraterrestrial civilizations visiting Earth,” a spokesperson for the Non-Governmental Organizations stated. “Our Canadian government needs to openly address these important issues of the possible deployment of weapons in outer space and war plans against ethical Extraterrestrial societies.”

4PROJECT PROVES UFOs IN SPACE

Dr. Oren Swearingen (DDS) of Texas and Flint of Belgium spotted anomalies during the STS-114 Shuttle mission. They had been watching "live" NASA Select TV coverage of the STS-114 mission. Both of these men saw a high speed UFO conducting maneuvers in space over the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and the West Coast. These men referred to what they had seen on their television screens simultaneously at 13:54 GMT, 6 August 2005. The incident inspired them to write Jeff Challender with a request that he review his VHS tape for the time in question. Dr Swearingen also sent me a copy of the tape for review.

A 41 frame animated GIF is centered on the final 55 seconds of the sequence containing the anomaly. In the original VHS tape, played at normal speed, this object seemed to come to a stop, and reverse itself. But research shows that it flew though the field of view, and made a long curving swing to the right. As the Sun rose higher toward the end, the clouds over the ocean far below were illuminated. In the final frames, the arcs of milky light which moved as the camera moved, were caused by the Sun lighting up the optics in the camera. Jeff was able to enlarge the anomalous object 500% and then cut it from the original 720x480 frame.

This object maneuvered in an intelligent manner and conducts a 180 degree turn, proving it is operating with its own power.

4NASA ASTRONAUTS SAW UFOs IN 1962

NASA was formed in 1958 and from the start a number of its astronauts and test pilots testified to sighting UFOs or craft of undetermined origin. Initially, Joseph Walker was the first to announce a sighting - he told the National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research in 1962 that he had an aerial encounter with two disc-shaped objects the previous month. He had actually filmed the encounter. In April 1962, NASA pilot, Joseph Walker, filmed five cylindrical and disc-shaped objects from his X-15 aircraft. Another test pilot, reported an incident involving a formation of UFOs while flying at 314,000 feet. NASA refused to reveal any evidence that might substantiate the pilots' claims - photographs or films were never released.. Many anomalous objects captured are caught on video during Shuttle Missions:

4NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY'S UFO INVESTIGATIONS UNEARTHED

There is one question that persistently circles the community of Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) true-believers: If the government has nothing to hide, UFO fans often ask, then why is it keeping so many UFO records under lock and key?

“Well, it turns out that the government does have something to hide, but it has nothing to do with extraterrestrials,” said Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, D.C.

A document has surfaced that had been stamped “Top Secret Umbra” — the code word for the highest, most sensitive category of communications intelligence.

The once-classified affidavit was originally filed by the National Security Agency (NSA) in a 1980 lawsuit to justify the withholding of records on UFOs. The document is largely declassified—with certain sections cut out, ostensibly to protect employee names, and keep NSA technologies, skills, and foreign connections out of the limelight.

The document—In Camera Affidavit of Eugene F. Yeates: Citizens Against UFO Secrecy v. National Security Agency, October 9, 1980—was released in redacted form on November 3 in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from researcher Michael Ravnitzky and posted on the website of the Federation of American Scientists.

A read of the document yields insight into how a super-secret agency like the NSA became caught up in the UFO phenomenon.

Created in November 1952, The National Security Agency/Central Security Service is America’s cryptologic organization. It coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. government information systems and churns out foreign signals intelligence information.

Being a high-tech organization, the NSA is a cutting-edge home for communications and data processing. It is also a center for foreign language analysis and research within the government.

The just-released 1980 document explains that a total of 239 documents related to UFOs were located in NSA files, with 79 of those documents originating with other government agencies. One document is an account by an NSA official attending a UFO symposium. A healthy chunk of these reports were produced between 1958 and 1979.

The titles of NSA-related UFO documents that are noted in the declassified document are intriguing, such as UFO Hypothesis and Survival Questions.

Another title cited is UFO’s and the Intelligence Community Blind Spot to Surprise or Deceptive Data. In this seven-page, undated, unofficial draft of a monograph authored by an unnamed NSA employee, the author reportedly points out what he considers to be “a serious shortcoming” in the NSA’s communications intelligence (COMINT) interception and reporting procedures. That is, “the inability to respond correctly to surprising information or deliberately deceptive data.”

The unidentified author uses the UFO phenomenon to illustrate his belief that the inability of the U.S. intelligence community to process this type of unusual data adversely affects U.S. intelligence gathering capabilities.

Within the pages of the newly-released affidavit—and between sections of excised copy—it shows NSA intercepted in 1971 communications between two aircraft and a ground controller discussing a “phenomena” in the sky, as well as radar screen observations, labeling what was viewed as “unidentifiable” objects.

Other intercepted and decrypted reports of bright lights, luminous objects, and unidentified aircraft—along with an elongated ball of fire—scooting through the skies over non-U.S. countries are noted too.

The 21-page affidavit makes clear that release of documents for public scrutiny, for a variety of reasons, “would seriously damage the ability of the United States to gather this vital intelligence information.”

Furthermore, how the NSA works with a network of foreign sources, organizations, and other governments to secure intelligence data would be adversely affected.

The majority of these records, explained NSA official Eugene F. Yeates in the 1980 affidavit, were communications intelligence reports that “are the product of intercept operations directed against foreign government controlled communications systems within their territorial boundaries.”

According to Aftergood, the newly declassified Yeates affidavit provides new insight into the types of records sought by UFO researchers that have been withheld by NSA.

“Even with all of the deletions, one can get a sense of the enormous scale—and the apparent success—of the worldwide electronic intercept operations conducted by NSA at the height of the Cold War,” Aftergood told Space.com.

“Unfortunately it is not clear from the affidavit how the withheld documents might have related to UFOs,” Aftergood said. “There must have been some connection in order for them to be within the scope of the original FOIA request ... but I have no idea what it was.”

But for those hungry to show a great government conspiracy is at work and that alien-driven UFOs routinely cruise through our skies, the just brought to light document won’t help you.

“The affidavit does not discount the UFO phenomenon…it simply doesn’t address it one way or the other,” Aftergood concluded.

4PUERTO RICO SAUCER TAKES SEA WATER

VIEQUES ISLAND --Witness Carlos Zen—n is a Viequense fisherman who claims UFO / alien incidents have been occurring since at least 1996. He was fishing out at sea a couple of miles south of La Esperanza about 9 PM when he saw several very bright spheres of light come out from the top of Cerro Ventana Mountain. "These globes of light were of a blue-white hue and seemed to come right out from the top of the hill. They circled the hill and flew out to sea flying right over. You could hear a slight hissing from them. Later they returned to Playa Grande and Cerro Ventana, areas controlled by the US Navy, and disappeared inside the mountain. It was as if they had merged with the side of the mountain.

Carlos states, "The most impressive event was when we encountered a huge object at night while out at sea fishing." I was with An’bal Corcino and his father who yelled, and I saw this huge craft came out from the sea near the Playa Grande lagoon, where the Navy's (Raytheon) ROTHR radar system is installed. "It was an extraordinary huge craft, immense, with many lights all around it. It was a flying saucer, a round disc-like craft, but really huge in size. It was clearly visible due to its size and the lights it had all over it, yellow, blue, and red lights. It was taking in water from the sea. The water at the sea's surface was swirling in a circle like a whirlpool. It seemed to be going up into the saucer in a column of water swirling like in a blender. It looked to be about 40 to 50 feet in diameter.

A column of bright green light like a powerful spotlight, was coming out from under the object. The beam came out downwards, vertically and the water went up into the saucer through the beam of light. After that, the object flew away to the west at a fantastic speed and disappeared in a matter of seconds. "Many others have seen these flying saucers and the US Navy is secretly studying this advanced type of technology, possibly of alien origin. <Snip>"

4CHEMTRAILS GO MAINSTREAM
Chemtrails Are Over Las Vegas
Marcus K. Dalton
Tribune Media Group

Part 1

Editor's Note: Las Vegas residents are increasingly noticing the appearance of chemical trails overhead. They appear EVERY weekend without fail, the only exception being the two weeks after September 11, 2001. Such "chemtrails" are substantially different in appearance to the normal condensation trails left by jet airliners. The difference is that while condensation trails are composed of water vapor that dissipates rapidly, "chemtrails" linger much longer and spread out over time to eventually cover the sky with a thin haze. This week the Las Vegas Tribune begins a two-part article to examine the undeniable and mysterious phenomena of Chemtrails Over Las Vegas.

Last year a concerned reader wrote to the Idaho Observer: "Driving across Idaho and Nevada we saw normal condensation trails in the skies above north Idaho and we were habitually looking up as we drove toward Las Vegas. We had noticed that the sparsely populated areas in Nevada had brilliantly clear blue skies and that the occasional airplane left vapor trails that dissipated normally. But as soon as we neared Las Vegas, in the skies directly above the city, we watched what appeared to be a military C-135 Transports spraying something over the populated areas. When the planes were no longer directly over Las Vegas, they continued flying leaving a vapor trail that dissipated normally."

It has been reported that the "chemtrails" contain ethylene dibromide -- a substance that has been an additive to gasoline and airplane fuels as well as a banned pesticide. Ethylene dibromide has been linked to kidney and liver damage and is an immunosuppressive and a lung irritant.

William Thomas, who has researched chemtrails since their appearance in the latter 90s, has noted stunted plant growth in once-healthy gardens and wilderness areas in Santa Fe and Aspen. Similar plant problems are commonly associated with chemtrails in other regions of the U.S.

A brief history of the chemtrail phenomenon can be traced to a Washington state man who told award-winning investigative reporter William Thomas that he'd become ill on New Year's Day 1999 after watching several jets make strange lines in the sky. Within six months, Thomas, writing primarily for the Environmental News Service, has detailed 1000s of eyewitness reports of chemtrails from 40 states.

"Mainstream newspapers have gone out of their way to dismiss these eyewitness accounts," Thomas told the New Mexican newspaper in June 1999, "It's easier to sell UFOs to major media than a phenomena as close in many cities as the nearest window."

Especially disturbing for residents of heavily chemtrailed communities like Las Vegas is a "chemtrail sickness" associated with heavy spray days leaving many stricken people complaining of the "flu" and acute allergic reactions months after the flu season has ended. Upper and lower respiratory and gastrointestinal ailments remain unusually high in many spray areas, along with debilitating fatigue - and something even more worrying.

What's going on?

Thomas is convinced that we are under "deliberate biological attack" by agents known only to top military and government officials responsible for permitting continuing over-flights by unmarked spray aircraft.

Government officials deny that anything unusual is taking place, yet increasing numbers of concerned observers are seeing 727-like aircraft painted "all-white with a black stripe up the middle of fuselage" laying long and often cries-crossing chemtrail patterns over Southern Nevada and elsewhere. None of the planes carry identifying markings.

Pat Edgar has been watching the jets spraying over eastern Oklahoma since a sunny day in October, 1997 when as many as 30 contrails gradually occluded the sky. "They look like they're playing tic-tac-toe up there," he says. "You know darn well it's not passenger planes." Edgar says he has watched "cob-webbing stuff coming down" from the zigzagging jets flying "all day long, line after line, back-and-forth, like furrows in a farm field." Edgar adds "There is a lot of Lupus in the area now. A lot of women have come down with it."

One source, who spoke to the Tribune under condition of anonymity, working as a civilian archeologist on government land throughout Nevada, began to notice "all white unmarked aircraft" preparing for take-off at Nellis AFB and at the Mancamp Complex near Tonapah in the late-90s. "It was these unmarked planes that were constantly laying down the crisscrossing X patterns of lingering chemical-spray trails over Southern Nevada." When the archeologist asked the military escort who accompanied the civilian research team into 'sensitive' areas around Nellis, about the planes, the reply received was, "You didn't see anything."

Another Las Vegas resident, Sandy Range, grew up within an outdoors field and stream-type family and has been watching the weather and the skies all her life. Holding a degree from Syracuse University, Range moved to Las Vegas in 1989. "I first began to notice the chemtrails in late '96 - 14 crisscrossed miles-long vapor trails that didn't evaporate like the norm. I began to see them weekly, then daily," Range states matter-of-factly.

One early morning in '99 Range was returning from Henderson when a low-flying craft dropped a trail right overhead along Boulder Highway. "It covered my car with a sticky web-like coating and I saved a specimen in a jar. Microscopic fiber-like filaments," Range reports.

Government denials, as usual.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio authored the Space Preservation Act of 2001, which sought a "permanent ban against weapons in space," specifically banning "chemtrails" as weapons. But in a subsequent version of the bill, the "chemtrails" language disappeared entirely. The missing words suggest an eyes-wide-open denial, which says as much about the cover-up as it does about the spraying that's plainly visible in the sky.

In a front-page story entitled "Conspiracy theorists look up," the Akron Beacon Journal noted that Kucinich's bill "had been rewritten and the references to chemtrails and the other types of weapons were quietly eliminated." The Beacon Journal article, linking chemtrails to conspiracies, resulted from massive local pressure. Michel Massullo of Akron provided that newspaper with rolls of photos of plane trails and a sworn affidavit attesting to extensive aerial activity over that city.

The U.S. Air Force Website refutes the "Chemtrail Hoax" as having been around since 1996, "accusing the Air Force of being involved in spraying the U.S. population" with mysterious substances: "Several authors cite an Air University research paper titled 'Weather as a Force Multiplier: Owning the Weather in 2025' that suggests the Air Force is conducting weather modification experiments. The purpose of that paper was part of a thesis to outline a strategy for the use of a future weather modification system to achieve military objectives and it does not reflect current military policy, practice, or capability. The Air Force is not conducting any weather modification experiments or programs and has no plans to do so in the future. The 'chemtrail' hoax has been investigated and refuted by many established and accredited universities, scientific organizations, and major media publications."

Explaining the government's position, Lieutenant Colonel Michael K. Gibson of the U.S. Air Force wrote U.S. Representative Mark Green in August 2000 and stated, "The term 'chemtrail' is a hoax that began circulating approximately three years ago which asserts the government is involved in a joint federal program of covert spraying of the public."

But many intelligent researchers call Gibson's communiqué a classic non-denial denial: Gibson is denying that the Air Force is secretly spraying U.S. citizens. The reality is the U.S. Space Command and other government agencies are involved in ongoing experiments for military and environmental purposes that involve aerial spraying, and the microfibers and other sprayed chemicals inevitably fall to earth, putting the public at risk.

Before you believe Gibson's and the government's "denial," do an Internet search for the following terms: "Joint Vision for 2020" and "Weather is a Force Multiplier: Owning the Weather in 2025", a whitepaper by MIT's Bernard Eastlund and H-bomb father Edward Teller. Before he died in 2003, Teller was director emeritus of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where plans for nuclear, biological and directed energy weapons are crafted. In 1997, Teller publicly outlined his proposal to use aircraft to scatter through the stratosphere millions of tons of electrically-conductive metallic materials, ostensibly to reduce global warming.

Two scientists working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base confirmed to the Ohio newspaper, Columbus Alive, that they were involved in aerial spraying experiments. One involved aluminum oxide spraying related to global warming and the other involved barium stearate and had to do with high-tech military communications.

And even in the face of government denials, environmental laboratories have begun to identify an extremely toxic component of the spray drifting over cities and countryside. Several independent sources claim that samples of fallout from the lingering smoke trails and have been independently tested and found to contain ethylene dibromide (EDB).

In 1998, a US Air Force public affairs officer told residents of Las Vegas that their sudden upsurge of respiratory ailments could have come from "routine" fuel-dumping by military aircraft reducing weight for landing.

An extremely hazardous pesticide, EDB was banned by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1983. But in 1991, the composition of jet fuel used by commercial and military jet aircraft in the U.S. was changed from JP4 to somewhat less flammable JP8. A Department of Defense source says the move "has saved some lives" in air crashes. Ethylene dibromide is a key component of JP8.

The 1991 Chemical Hazards of the Workplace warns that repeated exposure to low levels of ethylene dibromide results in "general weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pains, coughing and shortness of breath, upper respiratory tract irritation" and respiratory failure caused by swelling of the lymph glands in the lungs. "Deterioration of the heart, liver and kidneys, and hemorrhages in the respiratory tract," can also result from prolonged contact with JP8.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's hazardous materials list: "Ethylene dibromide is a carcinogen and must be handled with extreme caution." A seven-page summary of this pesticide's extreme toxicity notes that EDB may also damage the reproductive system. According to the EPA, "Exposure can irritate the lungs, repeated exposure may cause bronchitis, development of cough, and shortness of breath. It will damage the liver and kidneys".

Mark Witten, a respiratory physiologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson where an official US Air Force study on JP8 was carried out, told Scientist in March, 1998 that crew chiefs "seem to have more colds, more bronchitis, more chronic coughs than the people not exposed to jet fuel."

EDB is 6.5-times heavier than air. Unlike normal condensation trails, the thick white streamers being sprayed from downward-pointing tail-booms over at least 39 states does not dissipate, but spreads into an overcast that refracts a purple color in sunlight and appears suddenly as an oily film in puddles and ponds.

Hundreds of photographs and videotapes made by ground observers show pairs or larger formations of aircraft spreading a white mist that thickens and drifts toward the ground. Thousands of eye-witnesses - including police officers, pilots, military and public health personnel - have provided detailed accounts of aerial spraying in characteristic "X"s and east-to-west grid patterns, followed by occluded skies - and acute auto-immune reactions and respiratory infections throughout affected regions.

Severe headaches, nosebleeds, shortness of breath, joint pain and a dry hacking cough "that never leaves" are being reported by countless Americans jamming hospital Emergency Rooms from coast to coast. While December and January are traditionally bad months for asthma sufferers, patients, doctors and nurses across the U.S. report hospital wards filled to overflowing with bronchitis, pneumonia and acute asthma admissions at up to twice-normal winter rates.

"We're getting sprayed real heavily with the chemtrails," a Las Vegas resident told the Tribune. " On some days it's just total saturation."

As over-filled Pennsylvania hospitals were forced to divert respiratory emergencies to other facilities with bed space, a south-central Pennsylvania resident, Deborah Kammerer, looked out her window and watched aircraft "flying and dispersing over the city. It was supposed to be a clear sunny day. It became more overcast as the day progressed. I observed how the white trails widened out and settled down creating a haze over everything."

Where is the mainstream media's reporting of this mass phenomenon? Indications of a concerted cover-up came in February 2003, when a retired Southern Baptist preacher named Everett Burton finally succeeded in reaching C-span. After voicing his opinion on the Clinton impeachment trial, this former minister told Americans to get a copy of the Constitution and read it to realize what they have lost. Rev. Burton then advised viewers not to take his word for what was happening in the US, "just look up in the skies as the planes regularly spray contrails across the skies, spraying people and making them ill." At that point, Rev. Burton was cut off. The screen flipped from C-span to the Tennessee state seal, remained silent for several minutes.

... to be concluded next week.

4CYBER GHOSTS AND E-MAIL FROM THE DEAD
Computers, cell phones and digital cameras create new ways to experience the paranormal

His wife had died, but he kept her e-mail account open and checked it regularly to see if she had any messages from far-flung friends or acquaintances who didn't know she had passed away.

On the anniversary of their first date, a strange e-mail arrived with an attachment that had nothing in it. He checked to see who it was from, but there were no names in the "from" header area. On their wedding anniversary, an identical message arrived. He became convinced, he explained on a website devoted to the paranormal, that it was his dead wife trying to communicate with him.

E-mail and cell phone calls from the dead. Ghostly orbs that appear in pictures taken by digital cameras. Demons captured on cell phone cameras. New technology is having an impact on how people experience the paranormal.

"Any technology throughout history has been adapted to two things -- first of all pornography and secondly, the paranormal," James Alcock, a professor at York University who specializes in the psychology of belief, said. He is a founding member of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, a group that has investigated and exposed psychics, spoon benders, alien abductees and
poltergeists since it was formed in the mid-1970s.

But for some, cyberspace extends to the great beyond, and the Web is a worldwide Ouija board. There are thousands of websites devoted to the paranormal, where people report their supernatural experiences. Many are encounters with old-fashioned-style ghosts and apparitions, the kind that inspired the most spectral Halloween costumes you'll see on the dark streets tonight.

But a growing number involve modern technology, like cell phones. A young man gets calls from a grandparent warning that he left the oven on. What's remarkable is that Grandma is dead, said Amy Allen, Ontario director for Paranormal Phenomena Research & Investigation, an organization that includes about 75 paranormal investigators in Canada, and another 60 or so in the United States and around the world. These calls, she said, have always proved impossible to trace.

There are also reports of mysterious e-mails, like the one posted on a paranormal website by the man, who identified himself as Tom, who believed his wife had attempted to contact him on two important anniversaries in their relationship.

He's in good company. Even Thomas Edison saw new technology as a possible channel of communication with the spirit world, Dr. Alcock said. The inventor tried to make contact through a phonograph-like device in the 1890s and then tried again in the 1920s with chemical equipment.

The advent of photography was closely followed by mysterious pictures of ghosts, and today, digital cameras have sparked a similar boom in spooky pictures, including many containing strange, transparent orbs. Darryll Walsh, executive director of the Halifax-based Centre for Parapsychological Studies in Canada, said they are caused by the flash being too close to the lens in the point-and-shoot cameras.

"People want to see something," he said.

Once the telephone became popular, people reported calls from dead loved ones. The advent of television brought reports of people seeing faces of the dead on the screen. For several decades, people have reported hearing the voices of the dead on their tape recorders. The messages -- phrases like "Save Me" -- have not always been comforting.

Technology has meant changes for paranormal investigators such as Elliott Van Dusen, with the British Columbia Branch of Paranormal Phenomena Research & Investigation. He and his colleagues look into reports of the paranormal, looking for rational explanations. They offer their services for free.

He still gets lots of "conventional" cases and has been asked to investigate reports of strange noises at an abandoned military base, and a house that the residents believed was haunted by a mysterious visitor who left pennies in strange places.

But he recently received an e-mail from a young man in Germany. He said he and his friend were goofing around, taking pictures with his cell phone camera. When they looked at the digital photo, they say they saw what looked like a demon. It was a shadowy, skeletal face, obscured by smoke. He told Mr. Van Dusen that the "thing" in the photograph looked as if it wanted to be seen, or was trying to get their attention.

Mr. Van Dusen was immediately suspicious, but the picture was too small for the kind of computer analysis that can detect tampering. In the field report, he and his colleagues conclude that it looked remarkably like the faked ghost photos that were so popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. But they couldn't say for sure that it was fraud.

"Technology is a Catch-22. Sometimes it is easy to tell if something is fake because of technology," he said. But it also can make it easier for someone to perpetrate a hoax.

Mr. Van Dusen, 22 and finishing off a sociology degree, has been investigating reports of the paranormal since he was 16. He grew up near Halifax, where Mr. Walsh teaches two courses on the paranormal at a local community college. At first, Mr. Van Dusen was excited by the thought of finding a real ghost.

"As time went on," he said, "I started to get more skeptical."

4MYSTERIOUS AILMENT FELLS PARISHIONERS IN CONNECTICUT

"A mysterious illness forced the evacuation of hundreds of parishioners in the middle of a Mass Sunday," October 23, 2005, at a church in Wethersfield, Connecticut. "Police, fire and environmental crews responded to the (Roman Catholic) Church of the Incarnation during the 11 a.m. Mass after getting reports that several people had fallen ill. About a dozen people were affected and at least two were taken to the
hospital."

"The symptoms included dizziness, nausea and, in one case, fainting, said Deputy Fire Marshal Jeffrey Morrissette. About a dozen people were affected, and at least two were taken to the hospital."

"Some 400 people were evacuated while crews from the (Connecticut) Department of Environmental Protection took air samples. Tests for carbon monoxide came back negative, but the church remained closed while authorities await results of further tests. A confirmation service scheduled later in the afternoon was moved to a church in Rocky Hill, Conn."

"'Until the fire chief and the health director are totally convinced that things are safe, obviously they're not going to let them return to the church," the Rev. James Moran told WVIT-TV." (See Newsday for October 23, 2005, "Mysterious illness prompts mid-Mass evacuation.")

4THOUSANDS BAFFLED AS WEIRD ODOR PERMEATES NEW YORK CITY
"It smelled like brunch."

"Most thought it smelled like maple syrup, though there were a few votes for French toast, pancakes or even coffee cake. But even as the consensus clearly pointed to Aunt Jemima, no one could figure out what exactly wafted across Manhattan (an island borough of New York City- J.T.) and parts of New Jersey Thursday and yesterday," October 27 and 28, 2005.

NYC "Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced that tests had been conducted by the (New York state) Department of Environmental Protection, the Health Department and other agencies."

"'So far, no toxic material has been found,' Kelly said on Friday, October 28, 2005. 'It's believed to be some sort of food substance, but we can't substantiate that...'"

"Even Mayor (Michael) Bloomberg weighed in. 'The Coast Guard, the DEP, the Office of Emergency Management, the police-everybody has checked to make sure that it is nothing dangerous,' he said."

"Neither Jersey City Police nor the Port Authority Police Department reported receiving calls about the odor, but one Hoboken (New Jersey) resident said she did smell something like French toast in the air Thursday night."

"'I smelled it as I was walking home from Tribeca to the Upper West Side, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.,' said Michelle Collins, 24, who runs the online blog, youcanmakeitup.org."

"'At first I didn't say anything but when my roommate got home, she said she heard people talking about it all over the city. By then it was like IHOP on a Sunday morning.'"

"'At least it's a nice smell,' she continued, 'It's a lot better than (the air in Manhattan) usually smells. I wasn't concerned at first, but then I read somewhere today there is some sort of chemical that smells like maple syrup, and it's harmful but not deadly.'"

"On the Lower East Side, Nicki Benitz, an 85 year-old resident of a Madison Street housing project, was more pragmatic about the smells."

"'Down here,' she said, 'every time we fall asleep, we don't know if we're gonna wake up, anyhow.'" (See the New York Daily News for October 29, 2005, "Smell hath no fury.")

4THE GHOST ALWAYS RINGS TWICE

"Buyer beware, and be very, very afraid. Haunted houses are a seasonal treat for most, but, for some Massachusetts homeowners, the phrase aptly describes their very own residence. Christopher Balzano, a modern-day ghost hunter, says he has investigated numerous houses in the Boston area and has come away with some undeniable proof of haunting souls.

"Francis Donovan of Medway," Mass. "for instance has been sharing his home for the last 58 years with the late Rebecca 'Grammy' Garside. Garside took up residence at the home at 19 Winthrop Street" in Medway, Mass. "during the 1850s, when her family bought a neighboring linen factory, and she remained there until her death. During her final years, Garside was bedridden and relied on a small bell to alert family she needed a drink of water or other assistance. And, apparently, Garside is still ringing the bell."

"'The first time we thought it was a telephone and it wasn't. The second time, we had dinner guests over and they asked, 'Why don't you answer your telephone?'' Donovan, 88, recalled. Donovan eventually learned about the bell in 1960 from one of Garside's grandsons. 'Grammy Garside must still be around ringing it. We hear it sometimes frequently, sometimes infrequently. It's Grammy Garside telling us she's still around,' said Donovan." (See the Boston Herald for October 30, 2005, "Sur-real estate," page 3.)

4SPONTANEOUS HUMAN COMBUSTION
Burning Questions Surround Fiery Deaths

"Among the wonderful phenomena which chemistry presents to us, there are few more remarkable than those of spontaneous human combustion, in which bodies both animate and inanimate emit flames and are sometimes entirely consumed by internal fire." -- Letters on Natural Magic addressed to Sir Walter Scott -- Sir David Brewster, 1832

When Charles Dickens wrote his novel Bleak House in 1852 it caused a sensation. Never before had the idea of spontaneous human combustion (SHC) entered the mainstream. George Henry Lewes, a philosopher and critic, harangued Dickens for perpetuating a ridiculous superstition. Dickens fought back arguing that he had researched the subject and knew of about 30 such deaths.

Scotland's first SHC case was in 1829 when an Edinburgh man burst into flames whilst talking to his brother. Despite repeated dowsing with water the flames were only extinguished when both brothers were totally submerged.

The second case allegedly happened in Falkirk when a Gladys Cochrane was found burnt to a cinder in her armchair. The cushion and chair were untouched although all that was left of poor Gladys was ash.

SHC - where a person is burnt to ashes with no obvious trigger - has been, and still is, a contentious phenomenon. In the past 300 years only 200 cases have been documented and whilst science strives to "prove" a rational explanation, there are many who remain convinced that there is more to it than meets the eye.

When Sir David Brewster listed it in his 1832 book Letters on Natural Magic addressed to Sir Walter Scott, he described the death of Grace Pett, the pipe-smoking wife of an Ipswich fisherman who spontaneously combusted in 1744.

Brewster wrote that Pett retired to bed having "drunk plentiful gin". When her daughter opened the kitchen door the next morning, she walked in to a hellish scene:

"The trunk of the unfortunate woman was almost burned to ashes and appeared like a heap of charcoal," wrote Brewster. "There was no fire in the grate and a paper screen on the other side were untouched."

Pett's death epitomizes the circumstances of SHC. It often involves drink and no obvious source for the fire, with nearby combustible items left untouched. Furthermore, like all SHC cases, the body had been incinerated and body fat was present around the room.

From earliest times science has reported on these cases. But whilst today it tries to explain, older reports sometimes hint at unease.

On 19 February 1888, a Dr Booth was called out to a hay loft in Aberdeenshire to examine the remains of a 65-year-old man, someone, he notes, "of notoriously intemperate habits." He subsequently wrote up the case in the British Medical Journal.

"I found the charred remains of the man reclining against the stone wall of a hay loft. The body was almost a cinder. " Booth noted that loose hay surrounding the body was untouched and when the body was lifted, it disintegrated. He offered no explanation.

Recently, science has "explained" SHC with the so-called wick effect. Experiments suggest that if a body is set alight and wrapped up, then body fat, burning slowly, can achieve the same effects as SHC. Not everyone is convinced.

Gordon Rutter writes for the Fortean Times and is open-minded about the subject.

"With SHC it's very much 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'," says Rutter. "I have read reports from firemen who have said it's not like a normal fire. By all accounts it is rare, so it is difficult to study."

So just what could causes spontaneous human combustion? Well, as Rutter says, you can take your choice from a number of diverse possibilities:

 • Alcohol and cigarettes – blaming the demon drink was very popular in Victorian times when they were never quick to miss an opportunity to moralize. However, whilst a number of cases have involved heavy drinkers, it is not always the case.
 • The wick effect – by recreating the circumstances with a pig wrapped in a blanket, scientists reckon they have found the solution. Detractors point out that even after a number of hours in an oven at 600° Fahrenheit, bodies in crematoriums are still not burnt to ashes.
 • Faulty digestive system – a bad diet could cost you more than low energy levels and raised cholesterol. It has been posited that a build up of gases in the digestive tract could lead to unstable chemicals spontaneously combusting. This has been offered to explain cases where the individual has been seen to burn from the inside out.
 • Ball lightening – weird electrical fields, ball lightening et al have been pulled out, dusted down and put forward as theories. Not many takers though…
 • An act of God – or aliens, or any other weird thing that you'd like to imagine.

Because let's face it, if you've decided SHC is more than a tragic accident, then you're probably going to want to seek the explanation from as strange a source as possible.

4SECURITY GUARD FIRED AFTER SEEING GHOST

"A judge ruled that a former security guard who was fired for seeing a ghost cannot be denied unemployment benefits. According to a court ruling released this week, the former guard's allegation of apparitions does not constitute misconduct."

"The issue started on September 11 (2005) when Wade Gallegos alerted his superiors at Neighborhood Patrol of Urbandale (Iowa) that ghosts were haunting a neighborhood he was guarding. The supervisor arrived at the scene, where Gallegos showed him where the ghost was apparently standing. The supervisor claimed he saw nothing and fired Gallegos five hours later."

"The company found no signs of drug use or alcohol."

"Neighborhood Patrol challenged Gallegos' application for unemployment benefits," claiming that the guard was allegedly 'guilty of misconduct.'

"'Such beliefs do render the claimant unfit to act as a security guard,'" the judge in the case ruled, "'The employer cannot have security guards who see ghosts and apparitions, and then the employer sends out the patrol cars.'"

"However, the judge ruled, seeing ghosts is not the type of misconduct that can deny Gallegos from receiving benefits." (See the Des Moines Register for November 10, 2005, "Security guard fired for seeing ghosts." Many thanks to Karl Drown for this newspaper article.)
