Mr. Wladyslaw closes his business at 6 p.m. and sets off for home, which is a few miles away in a nearby village. His car is parked nearby but before he can reach it he is standing in a field along side his house. He is dazed, disorientated, confused. Over his head is a huge craft, so large in fact that he cannot make out its outline. He describes it as being larger than the entire village, oval and long with pulsating blue lights surrounding its sides.
A shaft of blue light suddenly engulfs him originating from the craft above. Time seems to stop as if frozen and then jerks ahead continuing…
He is alone, standing in a small oval room bathed in pale blue light. Two beings approach, standing on each side of him. He remembers that they were as tall as he, wearing blue metallic jackets, over which they wore what essentially looked like environmental suits that covered them from head to foot, complete with hood and rectangular visor. The suits were loose fitting and they had broad gloves over their hands.
These beings escorted him down a corridor and he noticed that they did not move their legs like humans. They seemed to glide as if their feet were on wheels. He had no conscious memory of walking. His locomotion as well as his thoughts were being controlled. The corridor was very long, reminding him of a tunnel also filled with blue light.
He arrives at another room. This one is very spacious, almost hall-like and oval. The outer walls are equipped with many instruments and machines. The technicians in this room are dressed in one-piece tunics and are very organized.
Wladyslaw finds himself sitting in a soft, comfortable armchair facing the center of the room. It reminds him of a dentist's chair. His captors are busy performing seemingly important tasks. Some approach and examine him. Their touch, or that of their instruments, makes him believe he is being stabbed.
The chair is equipped with a sliding tray that moves toward and away from him as if programmed. He places his hands on it and voice communicates the message, "Don't be afraid. You'll be alright." He can't see whose speaking but doesn't believe the voice is emanating from the room.
He is ordered to turn his hands with the palms up and then down. When the exam is completed the tray automatically retracts.
The voice he is hearing is very much in control and Wladyslaw believes it is the voice of the alien leader.
Information concerning ecology, global politics and mankind's mission on earth are communicated but not by specific words, but rather through the use of holographic projection. This memory fades and he is once again standing alone in the hall. An indeterminate period of time passes and voila he is back in the field near his home. He again looks overhead but the object is gone.
This scenario has been repeating itself many times with only subtle changes. Occasionally, on awakening in the morning his car will not be parked in his driveway and he will have to take the local bus to work. He never seems to be able to take note of the time when he arrives back home, so can't estimate the time period spent on the craft.
His first memories of being taken were in the period between 2000-2001. He recalls the experience recurring on a weekly basis. This pattern continued for approximately 18 months. During the next two years his abductions decreased and months would pass between incidents. It has now been several years since Mr. Wladyslaw's last abduction experience.
There may be physical evidence of an implant in his thumb. A small protrusion of an apparent hard substance below the surface suddenly appeared after one of the abductions. The object is only the size of a mustard seed. He is reluctant to have it removed as he believes that "the aliens wouldn't like it." He also fears they will return if the implant is removed.
However, he has consented to a having an x-ray of his thumb and his skull for other possible implants and is very curious as to the nature of the implants. He also has agreed to regressive hypnosis to recover lost memories, hoping to remember important details concerning his abduction experiences.
The case of Mr. Wladyslaw's abductions has been investigated by Grzegorz Domanski, an UFO researcher from the Legnica UFO Research Club. He was acquainted with a woman named Halina who related to him the strange experiences of her nephew.
Soon, a meeting was arranged, and Grzegorz met with Wladyslaw at Halina's apartment. It is important to note that Mr. Wladyslaw doesn't seek financial gain or notoriety for his revelations. For the purposes of the article both Mr. Wladyslaw and Halina are fictional names.
He claims that prior to his abductions he had no interest in UFOs, environmental protection, warring countries or global politics.
As a result of his experiences, Halina states that her nephews outlook at life has changed. Prior to his abductions he was an outgoing, vigorous and energetic person. Today, she claims, he is not.
Prior to his abduction experiences Mr. Wladyslaw believes he was first contacted or became aware of a bizarre phenomenon that was affecting his life in the middle of the 1980s. He would experience episodes of missing time, spontaneous electric appliance activation, vivid dreams of UFOs and most shockingly, blood droplets would appear on his pillow, when no visible trauma was present.
Mr. Wladyslaw's experiences are not unique, but his story along with tomes of other abduction cases is confirming the hypothesis that not all extraterrestrial races are peaceful and benevolent. Some are extremely dangerous and have unknown agendas.

UNDERWATER FIND COULD BE F-89 JET FROM 1953 KINROSS UFO INCIDENT There has been a stunning development in the half-century-old mystery of what happened to a Truax Air Force Base F-89 Scorpion jet airplane that disappeared over Lake Superior on Nov. 23, 1953.
The plane and its Madison-based crew - pilot Felix Moncla and radar observer Robert Wilson - were never found. The F-89 had been dispatched to track a large unidentified flying object that radar had spotted near the U.S.-Canadian border, and the plane's disappearance has been fodder for extraterrestrial theorists ever since.
It now appears the missing plane has been located. Earlier this month, divers and engineers from the Great Lakes Dive Co. posted on their Web site sonar photographs of what the group calls "the legendary missing F-89 Scorpion."
Gord Heath, a Canadian UFO investigator who has devoted considerable time to researching the F-89 disappearance - including several visits to Madison, most recently this past July - called the new find "a huge development" when we spoke Monday.
At the time of its disappearance in 1953, the F-89 was based not in Madison but rather at the Kinross Air Force Base in Michigan. A Capital Times story at the time explained that the plane and its crew "were part of a Truax Field contingent stationed temporarily at Kinross Air Base to substitute for Kinross personnel engaged in gunnery maneuvers at Yuma, Ariz."
In an incredible and tragic coincidence, the F-89 Scorpion temporarily stationed at Kinross was only one of two Truax F-89s to encounter serious difficulty on Nov. 23, 1953.
Shortly after noon that day, another F-89 Scorpion, this one at Truax with Lt. John Schmidt and Capt. Glenn Collins aboard, took off to test the afterburners of newly installed engines. While the test seemingly went fine, when the plane headed back toward Truax, witnesses below reported hearing an explosion, and then the jet crashed into a marsh in the Arboretum, killing both Schmidt and Collins.
It was less than six hours later that radar operators at Kinross, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, spotted the UFO in restricted air space over the Soo Locks.
Moncla and Wilson went up in an F-89 Scorpion to track the unidentified craft. Back at Kinross, radar tracked their plane closing in on the UFO over Lake Superior. Moncla's last words from the cockpit were, "I'm going in for another look."
The Capital Times reported what happened next: "The Truax jet was followed on the radar screen at Kinross until its image merged with that of the plane it was checking - then it was lost."
That odd radar image - of the mystery craft seeming to swallow the Truax jet, then both disappearing from the screen - has fueled the extraterrestrial theories. U.S. officials claimed the rogue blip on the screen was an off-course Canadian airliner, but Canadian authorities have denied that any of their planes were in the area.
In his 1955 book, "The Flying Saucer Conspiracy," Donald Keyhoe wrote: "The mystery craft and the F-89 came together far off-shore, about 100 miles from Sault Sainte Marie. ... As quickly as possible, search planes with flares were roaring over Lake Superior. After a fruitless night search, boats joined the hunt as American and Canadian flyers crisscrossed a hundred-mile area. But no trace was ever found of the missing men, the F-89 - or the unknown machine."
But then, in October 1968, the Sault Daily Star newspaper carried a story headlined, "Do aircraft parts belong to missing F-89?" Two prospectors had found the parts, including a tail section, on the eastern shore of Lake Superior. The paper quoted Air Force sources saying the parts belonged to "a high performance military jet aircraft."
Years later, when Gord Heath, the UFO investigator I spoke with Monday, tried to get records from the Canadian government of the jet parts found in 1968, he was told no records existed.
Heath has spent much of the past five years trying to learn the fate of the missing Truax F-89. He has a Web site - www.ufobc.ca/kinross - devoted to it. He has made research trips to Madison and has a section on the city on his site. A documentary film crew from Canadian television accompanied Heath on his last trip here in July.
Now, suddenly, the Great Lakes Dive Co. find has considerably upped the ante on this 53-year-old mystery. You can learn more about the company, and view the sonar photos of the F-89, on its Web site, www.greatlakesdive.com.
According to Adam Jimenez, spokesman for the company, the group formed in 2001 out of "a yearning to explain some of the enduring mysteries of the Great Lakes." Late in 2005, members were searching for two sunken French minesweepers when circumstances led them to the area over which the F-89 had disappeared. Five days into their sonar search, the site notes, "the computer returned some amazing images." It is, they seem certain, the Truax F-89.
Incredibly, sonar has also discovered an "unknown" near the sunken jet.
Jimenez describes the unknown as, "The object that the F-89 collided with is metallic and plowed into the lake bed in a similar manner as the F-89 south of the aircraft wreckage. The object bears a strike mark that matches a hole where the port side wing of the F-89 used to be (this supports the collision theory). We are a little baffled by the actual physics of the crash though...if you can imagine a plane colliding with another object and a wing shearing away, it seems as though the plane would spin out of control and disintegrate on the surface of the lake. Also, the plane is in deep water, yet appears to be plowed into the lake bed, how could the plane (or object for that matter) maintain enough power to accomplish this. I'm telling you this because we don't have all of the answers to this mystery yet. Our best guess is that the collision took place at or near sea level at relatively low speed. This scenario would preserve most of the aircraft structure, but still doesn't account for the plowing. We do have side scans of the object, and are currently discussing the possibility of releasing them."
There has been a lot of discussion within the team about the mystery object... but without ROV footage, it is very hard to determine what exactly it is. It is not a part of the F-89, and does not appear to be a part off of another aircraft...it is simply a mysterious object.
But like all great quests this one has hit a snag.
"2006 began as an ambitious project season for us, we were looking forward to further work at the F-89 site", said Jimenez . He added, "Then we received some bad news. The Canadian government refused to allow us to use our ROV at the wreck site without first providing them the GPS coordinates of the site and allows either a Coast Guard escort or government official to accompany the expedition. We were stuck, we don't want to give up the site (especially because of the object, and it's potentially huge significance) but we need stay on the good side of the Canadians."
"So as it stands now, we have just issued a letter to the Canadian government essentially abandoning work on the F-89 site this season", sums up Jimenez.
They next plan to take underwater video of the plane, which seems in remarkably good condition in perhaps 500 feet of water. Heath, who has been in contact with the Great Lakes Dive Co., says its condition - part of the tail is missing - matches up with the parts that were purportedly found in 1968.
Heath does not believe that the discovery means there wasn't an extraterrestrial ship involved in the 1953 disappearance. What if they were after the crew and not the plane? The sonar photos indicate the cockpit canopy of the F-89 is still intact. In time we should learn if the bodies of Felix Moncla and Robert Wilson are inside. If they aren't, it won't mean aliens got them - they might have bailed out - but if they are, the extraterrestrial theory might be put to rest. Some dead men can tell tales.

20,000-YEAR-OLD HUMAN FOOTPRINTS FOUND IN AUSTRALIA

August 3, 2006 About 20,000 years ago, five human hunters sprinted across the soft clay on the edge of a wetland in what is now New South Wales, Australia. Others also wandered across the muddy landscape, including a family of five, a small child, and a one-legged man who hopped without a crutch.
These early Aboriginal ancestors have long since vanished. But a record of their passage can be seen today in Mungo National Park, about 195 miles (315 kilometers) from Broken Hill. Woven among the sand dunes of the now arid Willandra Lakes World Heritage area are some 700 fossil footprints, 400 of them grouped in a set of 23 tracks.
First spotted in 2003 by a young Mhutti Mhutti Aboriginal woman named Mary Pappen, Jr., the tracks are the oldest fossil human footprints ever found in Australia and the largest collection of such prints in the world.
"Still Here"
Mary Pappen, Sr., a Mhutti Mhutti tribal elder and Pappen Jr.'s mother, says the age of the footprints highlights just how clever and adaptable Aboriginal ancestors were.
"We did not die 60,000 years ago. We didn't dry up and die away 26,000 years ago when the lakes were last full," she said. "We are a people that nurtured and looked after our landscape and walked across it, and we are still here today."
Steve Webb is a biological archaeologist with Bond University in Queensland. He has studied and partially excavated the tracks with help from other scientists and members of three area Aboriginal tribes. Last December Webb published a study in the online edition of the Journal of Human Evolution describing eight of the tracks, and his work continues. Webb says the footprints reveal things that archaeological sites or skeletal remains couldn't.
For example, "these people were very active in this area, and we wouldn't have guessed that," he said. The footprints also held puzzles, such as the tracks of what experts say was a one-legged man.
"All we could pick up was the right foot," Webb said, adding that each step left a very deep impression in the mud. "It's a very good impression," he said. "It's one of the best foot impressions there is on the whole site. But there is no sign of the left foot at all."
The conundrum was solved with the help of five trackers from the Pintubi people of central Australia. "They looked at the … track and said, Yes, it's definitely a one-legged man," Webb said.
"Now, these people are able to tell you whether a woman's got a baby on her hip when she's walking along and whether she moves that baby from the right hip to the left hip. So they see nuances of tracks in a way we have no skill in doing whatsoever."
It helped that the Pintubi knew a living one-legged man from their own community. "They knew what a one-legged man could do," Webb said. The trackers believe the ancient man probably threw his support stick away and hopped quite fast on one foot.
Olympic Sprinter
The trackers "gave us an amazing insight, just showing us small things which we hadn't even looked at," Webb said. One such detail was a set of small, round holes where a man stood with a spear. Another was a squiggle in the mud, perhaps drawn by a child.
Webb's own track analysis has yielded some intriguing conclusions, particularly for the prints left by a group he calls the Five Hunters. The archaeologist used data from 17,000-year-old human remains excavated nearby and details from the tracks themselves, such as foot size and stride length. The bones suggest the people were tall, in good health, and very athletic. What's more, Webb calculates that one hunter was running at 23 miles (37 kilometers) an hour, or as fast as an Olympic sprinter.
"If you weren't fit in those days, you didn't survive," Webb said.
To date, Webb and his colleagues have identified about 700 footprints. He says ground-penetrating radar suggests thousands more prints may lie below the ground in at least eight layers of ancient mud stacked like trodden carpets.
For now the excavated tracks sit under protective layers of cloth and dirt to shelter them from erosion caused by wind, sand, and rain. The footprints will stay there until scientists and Aboriginal community members devise a plan to protect the ancient tracks. As part of the plan, tribespeople want to erect community and educational centers near the site and develop related ecotourism. They also hope to build a "keeping place," or sacred shelter, to safeguard the footprints of their ancestral families.

INTRICATE CROP CIRCLE IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND One of history's most beautiful and intricate crop circles was discovered in southern England on August 6. This wonderful formation comes during a year when exceptionally wet and hot weather delayed the start of the season, and farmers have been destroying circles almost as fast as they are created.
As Linda Howe reported on the July 22 Dreamland, it is believed that British government representatives have approached farmers in the circle regions and asked them to stop accommodating researchers and the public, and destroy the formations as quickly as possible.
The military has been more than usually present in the area this year as well. And yet, despite all this, it is proving to be an exceptional season, capped by this artful and lovely formation.
The official word apparently would be that the image depicted here was made by drunken teenagers with boards on their feet, which could conceivably qualify as a sacrilege, as this rich communication continues to be rejected by the official world and the media, and therefore ignored by the general public.

Further details pending. This is the first known and reported Canadian formation for 2006 and the first BC formation since 2004 (none reported last year). Crop Circle Formation Report #2 - Schomberg, Ontario
Ringed circle with eight connecting spokes, in sorghum, approximately 18 meters (60 feet) diameter. Found by hayriders on August 17 or 18. Investigation is still on-going by CCCRN Ontario. Initial details, ground photos and diagrams are now posted. This is the second reported formation for 2006 and the first known Canadian formation in sorghum. Further details pending.

Odd Pattern in Wheat Field - Leader, Saskatchewan
Unusual semi-geometric pattern in wheat, found by pilot and CCCRN Saskatchewan assistant John Erickson on August 16. North of Leader in south-west Saskatchewan. Not being classified as a regular formation at this point, as plants apparently not flattened, and weeds are growing in the pattern area. While there may easily be a prosaic explanation, the cause is currently unknown. Aerial photos are now posted. Further details pending.

Unusual "doubled-lobed pathway" in prairie grass, approximately 55 meters (180 feet) long. Found on August 20. Grass is flattened laterally across the long, continuous closed pathway. ANOTHER MAYAN CROP DESIGN Crop designs have reached a new level of sophistication this season. But are we any closer to understanding their meaning? I have posted several articles during the past few weeks suggesting that an alien intelligence's method of contact could take many forms. Humanity should be vigilant for any apparent contact - no matter how strange or peculiar it appears.
The possibility that crop designs could be that type of communication should be garnering the attention of humanity. But for one reason or another - it is not.
Both the creator and method of creation are irrelevant at this point. Irrespective of whether human, alien, orb, or something not within our imaginations, humanity needs to understand the message first. It is the message not the messenger that is important. Deciphering the pictograms is humanity's first challenge. Unfortunately if we continue to ignore the obvious - it will also be our last. Something wants to tell humanity something. But humanity continues to ignore the beauty of the opportunity.

As I wandered around this circle I became aware of just how interesting the line structure was. This is a case of where seeing a formation on the ground is as significant as seeing it from the air.
The people I met in this circle really did enjoy the experience of walking around it and got a real buzz by standing, sitting and lying down in this delicate centre. The lay, appeared to me at least to be pretty impressive in crop that is about to be cut in the next few days.
This is the sort of formation where at first sight it does not have the huge impact of some of the others to appear this season but gradually the intricacies begin to reveal themselves. I also loved walking around the points of the star.
The location was outstanding as one could look across Pewsey Vale to the Milk Hill White Horse, Woodborough and Picton Hills in the distance. --Julian Gibsone

UNDERSTANDING RECENT CROP FORMATIONS Below are Parts One & Two of Linda Howe's excellent report attempting to interpret several recent extraordinary crop circles. The crop circle phenomenon needs an activist organization and a charismatic spokesperson. It also needs a new name. Crop designs are being created for a reason. On July 8, 2006, four extraordinary crop formations were reported in southern England. The sequence began in Boxley near Maidstone in the county of Kent southeast of London with a 'fractal snowflake.' Many investigators think this was the finest crop formation of 2006.
In the county of Oxfordshire, England, formations were reported at Wayland's Smithy and Uffington Castle on the same day of July 8, 2006. Then a month later on August 6, 2006, another formation was reported at Blowingstone Hill in Kingston Lisle, northeast of Uffington Castle.

OUT-OF-PLACE OCTOPUS PULLED FROM OHIO RIVER David Stepp was fishing for catfish with friends on the Ohio River Monday night when he reeled in a bizarre catch — an octopus.
It was dead, but only recently.
Recognizing that nobody would ever believe he had actually caught the creature, the 20-year-old Jeffersonville man loaded it into the trunk of his car and showed it minutes later to a Clarksville police officer and Bill Putt, a park ranger at the Falls of the Ohio State Park.
Putt snapped photos, and Stepp and his surprised companions posed with the purplish-brown animal, which measured six feet from the tip of one tentacle to the other. It was three and half feet tall when dangled like a mop above the ground.
“It was really pretty big,” said Putt, who later deposited the octopus in a park freezer, figuring a marine biologist might want to examine it.
Although he’s seen more than his share of exotic animals turn up at the Southern Indiana park across from downtown Louisville, Putt said he was extremely skeptical when a fellow angler said that someone had caught an octopus below the dam.
“I thought, ‘This guy’s got to be drunk,’ ” Putt said. But “we looked at it and that’s what it was.”
The octopus might take the prize for weird discoveries at the falls, where park crews and visitors have found crocodiles and piranha-like tropical fish over the years — animals probably kept as pets and released by owners into the river and onto river banks.
Octopods are highly intelligent as invertebrates go, according to an article on the National Wildlife Foundation’s Web site. They are sometimes kept as pets and surprise their owners by escaping from seemingly secure tanks “due to their intelligence and problem-solving skills,” the entry said.
Because they live in salt water oceans, they don’t survive long in fresh water such as the Ohio River, Putt said.
It’s not illegal to own the animals, but releasing it into the wild is, said Mark Farmer, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
“Who’s to say somebody didn’t toss it into the river?” Farmer said. “I found out a long time ago, you never know what’s going to turn up.”

MAMMOTHS MAY ROAM AGAIN AFTER 27,000 YEARS Bodies of extinct Ice Age mammals, such as woolly mammoths, that have been frozen in permafrost for thousands of years may contain viable sperm that could be used to bring them back from the dead, scientists said yesterday.
Research has indicated that mammalian sperm can survive being frozen for much longer than was previously thought, suggesting that it could potentially be recovered from species that have died out.
Several well-preserved mammoth carcasses have been found in the permafrost of Siberia, and scientists estimate that there could be millions more.
Last year a Canadian team demonstrated that it was possible to extract DNA from the specimens, and announced the sequencing of about 1 per cent of the genome of a mammoth that died about 27,000 years ago.
With access to the mammoth’s genetic code, and with frozen sperm recovered from testes, it may be possible to resurrect an animal that is very similar to a mammoth.
The mammoth is a close genetic cousin of the modern Asian elephant, and scientists think that the two may be capable of interbreeding. The frozen mammoth sperm could be injected into elephant eggs, producing offspring that would be 50 per cent mammoth.
The suggestion that it may be possible to recreate an animal that is at least part-mammoth has emerged from a study of mice by Japanese, British and American scientists.
While many types of mammalian sperm, including that of humans, can be preserved by freezing, mouse sperm is vulnerable to damage that can limit its ability to fertilize eggs when it is thawed.
A team led by Narumi Ogonuki of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Bioresource Centre in Tsukuba, central Japan, has demonstrated that sperm better survives freezing if testes, or whole mouse bodies, are frozen.
Even sperm taken from mouse bodies that had been frozen 15 years ago was capable of fertilizing mouse eggs and producing pups, the researchers found.
The work has technical implications for the breeding of laboratory mice for medical research, but it also shows in principle that mammalian sperm can survive in a body that has been frozen for several years.
This could mean that it is able to survive in similar fashion over much longer periods, as in mammoths frozen in permafrost.
“Restoration of extinct species could be possible if male individuals are found in permafrost,” Dr Ogonuki said. “If sperm of extinct mammalian species, for example the woolly mammoth, can be retrieved from animal bodies that were kept frozen for millions of years in permanent frost, live animals might be restored by injecting them into oocytes [eggs] from females of closely related species.”

BIZARRE MAINE ANIMAL RECALLS ELMENDORF BEAST When evidence of strange animals surfaced in Texas in 2004, Whitley Strieber immediately sent researchers to the scene. Photographs were taken, DNA was obtained and a biologist examined the animal's skull. Now another mystery animal has been killed in Maine in a road accident. Maine wildlife officials have refused even to look at the remains and the Washington Post reports that an expert says that it's just a dog. Local residents tell a different story, of a creature that appears to be part rodent and part canine, with protruding incisors.
Androscoggin County residents have been reporting the presence of an animal with a horrific scream that mauls local dogs since 1993, and cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, who has looked at pictures of the creature, says that it appears to be a cross between a wolf and a dog, but with unusual curving fangs not unlike those found on the Elmendorf Beast and the Lufkin Animal that was found some months later. The carcass was picked clean by vultures and there are no plans to study it.
BIZARRE CARCASS DISCOVERED IN MAINE

The SF Gate has reported that a mysterious, canine-like creature was struck dead by a car and photographed on August 12, 2006. The animal, which some have described as a cross between a dog and a rodent, was charcoal gray, weighed between 40 and 50 pounds and had a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman examined the carcass, stating: "I think this dead animal is a chow or chow-mix, a relatively small dog, that was feral, which is unusual for that area. Nevertheless, this interesting body probably has nothing to do with the local killings, and it is highly doubtful the real ‘mystery beast.’" Eyewitness Michelle O’Donnell, who claimed to have spotted the animal near her yard roughly a week before the carcass was discovered, felt that the beast in question was less mundane in origin: “It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget,” she said. “We locked eyes for a few seconds and then it took off. I’ve lived in Maine my whole life and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

STUDY: EARTH CHANGED AFTER SUMATRA QUAKE
NewsTrack - Science COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they've determined Earth's gravity changed as a result of the giant 2004 Sumatran earthquake. The discovery marked the first time scientists have used satellite data to detect changes in the Earth's surface caused by a massive earthquake.
The discovery signifies a new use for data from NASA satellites and offers a possible new approach to understanding how earthquakes work.
The 9.1-magnitude December 2004 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake in the Indian Ocean produced a tsunami that killed approximately 230,000 people, while displacing more than 1 million others. The event followed the slipping of two continental plates under the seafloor that raised ocean bed in the region by several feet for thousands of square miles.
"The earthquake changed the gravity in that part of the world in two ways that we were able to detect," said Shin-Chan Han, a research scientist at Ohio State University. He and colleagues determined the quake triggered the massive uplift of the seafloor, changing the geometry of the region and altering previous global positioning satellite measurements of the area. And the density of the rock beneath the seafloor shifted, producing detectable gravity changes.

09 August 2006 A nondescript grass discovered in the Oregon countryside is hardly an alien invasion. Yet the plant - a genetically modified form of a grass commonly grown on golf courses - is worrying the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) enough that it is running its first full environmental impact assessment of a GM plant.
It is the first time a GM plant has escaped into the wild in the US, and it has managed it before securing USDA approval. The plant, creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera, carries a bacterial gene that makes it immune to the potent herbicide glyphosate, better known as Roundup. The manufacturer, The Scotts Company, Marysville, Ohio, is hoping the grass will provide a turf that makes it easier for golf course owners to manage their fairways and greens by letting them kill competing weedy grasses with glyphosate.
Jay Reichman and colleagues at the US Environmental Protection Agency's labs in Corvallis, Oregon, identified nine escapees out of 20,400 plants of various grass varieties sampled within a 4.8-kilometre radius of the site where the bentgrass is being cultivated, the most distant 3.8 kilometers away. The team showed that the GM grass has spread both by pollinating non-GM plants to form hybrids, and by seed movement.
Bentgrass is a perennial, so once out there it regrows year after year, whereas most GM crops - mainly soybeans, maize and canola (oilseed rape) - are annuals, unable to reproduce, harvested each year and replaced with an entirely new crop the next. Another worry is that unlike the other GM crops, bentgrass has many relatives in the US with which it can cross-breed or hybridize, potentially passing on the glyphosate-resistance gene to other species - with unpredictable results.
"It's a cautionary tale of what could happen with other GM plants that could be of greater concern," says Reichman. "I suspect that more examples of this will show up." His report will appear in the October issue of Molecular Ecology.
If bentgrass is approved by the USDA, it could prove a hit with the thousands of golf course managers throughout the US, making it easy for the crop to spread far and wide. If it reaches environmentally sensitive wildernesses or establishes itself by waterways, removing it could require weed killers far more harmful than the relatively benign glyphosate.
"It's definitely a new set of variables we've not had to deal with in previous GM crops," says Eric Baack of Indiana University in Bloomington, who comments on Reichman's findings in Current Biology (vol. 16, p R1). Still, it isn't clear whether the gene would have much impact in the wild. "You wouldn't expect the weed killer-resistance gene to be a particular advantage in the wild," says Baack. Also, the USDA doesn't class conventional bentgrass as a "noxious" weed.
There is however the possibility of litigation if the GM grass contaminates other elite grass strains under cultivation. Some 70 per cent of the US's commercial grass seed is grown in Oregon, so there is the potential for accidental adulteration.
The USDA is not taking any chances. "This is a perennial, and has wild and weedy relatives, and it's something we think we need to know the environmental impact of before it's deregulated," says a spokeswoman for the USDA's Biotechnology Regulatory Services in Riverdale, Maryland. "There's no current set date for when [the environmental impact assessment] will be finished," she says.
Whether the US public takes any notice of the furor is another question entirely. "I don't think people will worry about lawns and golf courses if they've not shown any worries already about GM food," says Baack.

JAPAN BANS CONTAMINATED US RICE
"Trace amounts" of the GM variety have been found in supplies Japan has suspended US long-grain rice imports after supplies were found to contain a genetically engineered variety that is unapproved for sale. The European Commission said it was seeking information from US authorities "with the utmost urgency".
"Trace amounts" of the experimental rice variety were detected in US commercial supplies by the German company Bayer CropScience. Bayer then notified US officials about the positive test.
The genetically engineered rice variety, LLRICE 601, possesses bacterial DNA that makes the rice plants resistant to a weed killer. The strain is not approved for sale in the US, but two other strains of rice with the same genetically engineered protein are.
The majority of US rice imported by Japan is short- and medium-grain. These are unaffected by the ban. A spokesperson for the Japanese embassy in London said the ban would likely remain in place "until the US can say the rice no longer contains the genetically engineered variety".
Antonia Mochan, a European Commission spokesperson for science and research, told the BBC: "This is a matter of utmost urgency for us and we will be looking to act as soon as we can once we have the knowledge that can inform that decision."
She would not rule out a suspension of imports, but said many options could be considered depending on the answers they received.
In a statement, US agriculture secretary, Mike Johanns, said: "There are no human health, food safety, or environmental concerns associated with this [genetically engineered] rice."
Friends of the Earth UK's GM campaigner Clare Oxborrow commented: "Bayer and the US Authorities must now explain how this has happened and release all available safety data to reveal what the risks are for consumers. They must also urgently investigate the full extent of the contamination."
Officials at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said the GM variety had been found in samples from storage bins in Arkansas and Missouri. The bins hold rice from several states, making it difficult to know from which state the rice came.
Secretary Johanns said the US Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Aphis) was conducting an investigation to determine how the release happened and whether it broke USDA regulations.

GREENLAND'S ICE CAP MELTING AT FRIGHTENING PACE

Friday, August 11,2006 The vast ice cap that covers Greenland nearly three miles thick is melting faster than ever before on record, and the pace is speeding year by year, according to global climate watchers gathering data from twin satellites that probe the effects of warming on the huge northern island.
The consequence is already evident in a small but ominous rise in sea levels around the world, a pace that is also accelerating, the scientists say.
According to the scientists' data, Greenland's ice is melting at a rate three times faster than it was only five years ago. The estimate of the melting trend that has been observed for nearly a decade comes from a University of Texas team monitoring a satellite mission that measures changes in the Earth's gravity over the entire Greenland ice cap as the ice melts and the water flows down into the Arctic ocean.
"We have only been watching the ice cap melt during a relatively short period," physicist Jianli Chen said Thursday, "but we are seeing the strongest evidence of it yet, and in the near future the pace of melting will accelerate even more."
The same satellites tracking Greenland's ice cap also are monitoring the melt rate of Antarctica's ice cover, and there too the melting is adding to the global rise in sea level, according to another team of scientists.
Next to Antarctica, Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth and holds about 10 percent of the world's supply. The increasing flow of fresh water -- most of it from glaciers melting on Greenland's eastern coast -- is already beginning to change the composition of the ocean's salt water currents flowing past Northwestern Europe, the scientists say.
The result could be a critical change in the composition of the main ocean current that flows past Europe's northern edge, blocking off warmer waters that normally flow there and -- ironically -- making Northern Europe's weather colder than normal, at least temporarily, while the rest of the globe continues warming.
The report on Greenland is being published today in the on-line edition of the journal Science by the University of Texas scientists at Austin, including Chen, aerospace engineer Byron Tapley and geologist Clark Wilson.
According to the researchers, surface melting of Greenland's ice cap reached 57 cubic miles a year between April of 2002 and November of 2005, compared to about 19 cubic miles a year between 1997 and 2003.
"The sobering thing is to see that the whole process of glacial melting is stepping up much more rapidly than before," said Tapley in a statement.
If the Greenland ice cap ever melted completely -- a highly unlikely event, at least in the foreseeable future -- the scientists estimate it would raise world's sea level by an average of 6.5 meters, or about 21 feet, more than enough to drown all the world's low-lying islands and even some entire nations, like Holland.
The possibility of future sea level rises becomes even more evident when Antarctica's huge ice sheets are considered.
Only last March two University of Colorado physicists used the same satellite system to measure melting of ice on the Antarctic continent. Although earlier evidence using other techniques appeared to show that the East Antarctica ice sheet was actually thickening, satellite data gathered by Isabella Velicogna and John Wahr at Boulder found that melting -- primarily from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet -- had turned at least 36 cubic miles of ice to fresh water each year from 2002 to 2005.
A recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -- known as the IPCC -- estimated that during all of the past century worldwide melting ice from global warming had raised sea levels by only two-tenths of a millimeter a year, or about 20 millimeters over the last century. The current rate of rise is approximately five times faster than past estimates.
But, according to Chen and his Texas team, the melting of Greenland's ice cap is already raising global sea levels by six-tenths of a millimeter each year, and the Colorado group estimates that melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet alone is adding up to four-tenths of a millimeter of fresh water to sea levels each year. In other words, the global sea level, due to melting of the ice in Greenland and Antarctica combined, is already rising 10 times faster than the IPPC's tentative estimates, the two analyses indicate.
Both the Texas and Colorado groups have been obtaining their data from two satellites known as GRACE, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, which fly in orbit 137 miles apart and determine with extraordinary accuracy just how the mass of even small regions of the Earth change as ice melts and flows away from the land to the sea.
The GRACE satellite mission is due to end next year, but the Texas team is awaiting NASA approval for a new and improved satellite system to continue the work, using laser beams rather than microwaves to measure ice cap melting, Chen said.
In a recent summary of the ice cap melting problem and its effect on sea levels reported by Richard Kerr in Science, geoscientist Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton said, "The time scale for future loss of most of an ice sheet may not be millennia," as glacier models have suggested, "but centuries."

RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS FORECAST 'LITTLE ICE AGE' IN 6-9 YEARS Global cooling could develop on Earth in 50 years and have serious consequences before it is replaced by a period of warming in the early 22nd century, a Russian Academy of Sciences’ astronomical observatory’s report says, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday.
Environmentalists and scientists warn not about the dangers of global warming provoked by man’s detrimental effect on the planet’s climate, but global cooling. Though never widely supported, it is a theory postulating an overwhelming cooling of the Earth which could involve glaciation.
“On the basis of our [solar emission] research, we developed a scenario of a global cooling of the Earth’s climate by the middle of this century and the beginning of a regular 200-year-long cycle of the climate’s global warming at the start of the 22nd century,” said the head of the space research sector.
Khabibullo Abdusamatov said he and his colleagues had concluded that a period of global cooling similar to one seen in the late 17th century — when canals froze in the Netherlands and people had to leave their dwellings in Greenland — could start in 2012-2015 and reach its peak in 2055-2060.
He said he believed the future climate change would have very serious consequences and that authorities should start preparing for them today because “climate cooling is connected with changing temperatures, especially for northern countries.”
“The Kyoto initiatives to save the planet from the greenhouse effect should be put off until better times,” he said, referring to an international treaty on climate change targeting greenhouse gas emissions.
“The global temperature maximum has been reached on Earth, and Earth’s global temperature will decline to a climatic minimum even without the Kyoto protocol,” Abdusamatov said.

Norman Bryden continues: This is a closer image of what looks like a Martian City photographed by the Mars Global Surveyor. Please observe how the long structures intertwine and travel up and over and down and under each other. These tube like structures are miles in length and quite large. The precision instrumentation sent to Mars by scientists has recorded a vast network of infrastructure. If we were on the surface, you would be astounded by the incredible size and complexity. In between these roads are many block and other shaped structures. The structures are stacked in steps in places and there is a variety of shapes you can easily see. These structures cannot be explained by any known nonliving process. They can be explained by processes we see on earth built by intelligent beings.
I think that many of the images have been intentionally degraded. It is my opinion that they have better images and the images released are an attempt to slow down the learning curve regarding the astounding structures on Mars. Old stream valleys cut into the flanks of a gently sloping mountain range in the center of the image. Layers of smooth-textured deposits have mantled the stream valleys and many impact craters. Wind and sublimation of water or carbon dioxide ice have partially eroded patches of the smooth-textured deposits, leaving behind areas of layered and hummocky terrain. On planetary surfaces, such fault-related ridges are termed "wrinkle ridges." They are commonly observed on Mars and named Ogygis Rupes. This wrinkle ridge has deformed several valleys and impact craters.

The angled hillside provides best sunlight for the solar panels and allows the rover to continue operating well into its second year. These new images show some excellent specimens that are without a doubt some of the clearest sea shells yet imaged on Mars.
I have cropped out the sea shells and combined them in individual, stereo views. The first is a broken open spiral shell and presents its spiral end directly to us. You can see that it is perfectly round, wafer thin, and does indeed spiral at the tip.

The similarity is unmistakable. This is clearly another Martian sea shell. A second sea shell in the same image frame. This is very clear; no other item has this look or structure.

Agreements to secrecy may override their ability to release research results Over the last year, I have expected that some acknowledgement of the findings on Mars would have been made by NASA or JPL. There is so much data and so many clear signs of fossil life, and these are supported by the discoveries of Mars' wet and clement past. All of these things paint a picture of a much more Earthlike past for the red planet, with oceans, glaciers, weather cycles and a thicker atmosphere.
As time passed and more discoveries were made, my first thought was that they were taking their time to make certain of the details- it is always necessary to present a clear and irrefutable case when making an announcement of this magnitude. When this did not happen in the course of a couple of months, I began to do what any researcher with a huge discovery would do- publish everything.
In retrospect, I should have spotted that something was wrong when Steven Squyres, an astronomer for NASA and the principal scientific investigator for the two Mars Exploration Rovers, made a statement to the press that the findings were definitely not fossils. I was astounded. Understand that Squyres, a professional astronomer at Cornell University, and the man responsible for designing, building, and testing many of the MER instruments, is not to be taken lightly. He clearly has technical skills and scientific understanding, and has put those tools to excellent use. So when I read his statement, I could not believe what I was seeing.
His statement as reported in Space.com was clear: "There simply is no reason to promote a biological origin for these [spherules] when there are so many other, far more probable ways of making them," Squyres said. And even before the mission, his position was made clear before seeing the first close-up images of the sediments in Meridiani Planum. Asked if he had any hope of finding fossilized life on Mars, Squyres replied: "Never."
One NASA geologist, as reported in this article on MSNBC related how uncomfortable researchers became when confronted with the "rotini" feature, a curly thing that appeared in one of the images. “This feature has the team in Pasadena squirming,” he said. “They want it to be an artifact [that is, not ‘real’].” So why would researchers be so uncomfortable with the idea of life on Mars, when in fact they were looking for signs of water and the possibility that life might have once been there? This indicates a clear bias against the possibility at the outset- in other words, it appears that at least some of the researchers had already made their minds up in advance, and now they could not accept what they were being confronted with. This is not how scientific advances are made.
To their credit, a rigorous test was devised that should have discounted anything suspect and admitted certain findings- this was known as the Knoll Criterion. In essence, anything that looked like a fossil but might have been formed by geological or non-biological means would have to be discounted, while only those things that could not conceivably have been formed by geological, chemical, or mineralogical processes would be considered as a sign of life. Yet, even when plainly confronted with such items, no word has emerged.
At this point, and from early on in the research, NASA has clammed up. There have been no admissions of fossil findings, although lots of hedging has been done. And, there have been no more outright denials of fossils as well. In fact, there has been a strained, practiced silence since, and images that suggest life or its remains have been sternly ignored. If these were not fossils, you would expect that they would say clearly, and based on all the evidence to date, that they have not found any fossils. But they haven't done that.
Conversely, you would expect that if they had found that these were fossils, they would have confirmed it by now. But once more, not a word has been said. This raised many questions for me.
Understand that after publishing my findings on the web and making radio appearances revealing and discussing my findings, I was contacted by a small number of people who work for NASA and others who work for JPL. They asked to remain anonymous because they would face extreme penalties if they talked, and the indicated that they had signed a non-disclosure agreement that prevented them from publicly announcing anything that had been found. But each and every one confirmed everything that I had found; that Mars was a fossil planet, and that water had been plentiful for a very long time. Also it was revealed that there was an oceanographer working on the MER team, which is a curious thing when you consider the implications.
All the fossils I have found are of marine organisms, and they point to an ocean covered Mars. This is consistent with what we know, because on a world with thinning atmosphere, only in the water could most organisms expect to find what they need for life. In other words, on Mars the water would have been a surrogate atmosphere, and life could have thrived. So why will nobody admit what has been found, even though all the evidence, both scientific and photographic, states clearly that Mars was a world teeming with life? I believe that an answer has been found.
JPL was once controlled by the Army, and even in recent times it receives, uses, and generates classified data. But some of that data makes you really step back and ask, "why?" What is most astounding is what I was told by the people I spoke with- that although the information that resulted from Mars research was not classified, they had signed non-disclosure agreements that provided stiff federal penalties for anyone speaking about their findings. Those penalties could include federal prison time and loss of academic credentials, and if you have dedicated your studies and career to working in space or defense, that would mean an end to your career. So why is the information so tightly controlled?
Some of the data that JPL has access to (and presumably uses) is foreign intelligence, NATO files, and critical nuclear weapons design information. What in the world do those things have to do with planetary research? My first thought was that if they commingled that data (or mixed it) with their normal research data, it would mean that the results could be tightly controlled even though it, in itself, might not actually be classified or of great import. This tool would allow them to have very tight control over intellectual properties and products, such as patents and the results of research papers.
And, in a sense, this is a workable strategy. But it gets stranger yet. Suppose a news reporter in a war zone, say Iraq for instance, filmed some action and in the filming captured scenes of a nuclear weapon or some other classified hardware on film. That footage would be classified, and would not be released. Now, imagine that some robot on Mars or the Moon located and imaged some classified hardware, be it spacecraft or weapon. The repercussions would be great. But foreign hardware can be classified, and that is an important point. Just because another government or group made it, it does not automatically mean that it is "okay". It still can fall under federal jurisdiction.
Now, what if it was alien hardware? And don't assume that alien has to mean "extraterrestrial". It might be from a country that we don't expect has the capability to place something on the Moon or Mars. So this is just hypothetical, but imagine if an alien artifact were photographed. Would we expect to see it? It would raise many questions that are even today uncomfortable ones to address. Alien hardware would imply certain technical skills. And, we might learn things from it that would have broad reaching consequences in our civilization. It might even trigger diplomatic problems or warfare. So as a matter of course, we would expect that alien hardware, be it from a foreign government or from an extraterrestrial source, would be classified as secret.
Now, let's step back one turn, and look at the implications. They found fossils, and that much is clear. But are fossils artifacts? Alien fossils are perhaps in the gray zone, and this leaves them in a quandary. If they state outright to the press that these are not fossils, then they are lying to the public. But if they say that they are fossils, then they might be releasing classified information. No matter what they say, science is overridden by either politics or by secrecy. They can't say anything!
So they have tied their own hands. They cannot admit and they cannot deny. This explains the thunderous silence, and why so many people can see these fossils but nobody seems willing to take a stand. Most academics, particularly in schools and universities, listen very closely to authority, because they know not to bite the hand that feeds them. They face the real and bitter prospect of losing all that they have studied and worked for. Silence, no matter how imposed, is their only option if they want to pursue their work.
And the public has a long love-hate relationship with government and authority. While many people do not trust government, they still accept many of the things they are told as gospel, just because it comes from an authority. It is far easier to accept what you are told than to actually question it. It means that things go more smoothly and nobody stands out as odd or unusual. As a consequence, very few people are going to buck the established word on things.
I do not worry about such things. I am in this for the facts. I know that the findings from past research on Mars have been very compelling, but dismissed with a wave of the hand and no good explanation in the past. The Labeled Release Experiment on Viking is a prime example, and the fossilized microbes in the Martian meteorite AH-84001 are another. Here we have two examples of what I feel are extraterrestrial life, or at least its signs. In my opinion, Dr. Gilbert Levin is the true discoverer of alien life.
My contribution to this is that I have located dozens of fossils and compiled the data in a form that is easily accessed. I have included papers on how and why, supporting evidence that there is present day liquid water on Mars, and also made a case that a Mars sample return would be a dangerous and foolhardy thing to do. If nothing else, I have published where nobody else would. That alone shows an academic right to the claim that there is indeed fossilized life on Mars, that there is now liquid water on Mars, and that there is in all probability extant life on Mars today.
Now, what do we do with these findings?

MARS: CRATER WITH WATERFALL AND DAM-LIKE STRUCTURE

The crater has what looks like a modified wall to the lower right. You can see the cut out portion and it looks as if it is a dam-like structure, with possibly water tumbling over the edge. The formation looks to be more than a random formation. I have seen several structures that look like walls and dams, and I believe that they are water reservoirs intelligently created to intentionally harness the water supply on Mars. More craters in the full image you can download from the links below seem to have modified walls, and other interesting features.

HAS SETI MADE CONTACT?
Yes! According to Dr. Steven Greer On the July 30, 2006 "Coast to Coast AM" radio broadcast, Art Bell made the following announcement. According to Dr. Steven Greer:
(paraphrased) We have confirmation that SETI has received signals "confirmed" as contact from an alien source. These multiple signals are increasing in number and frequency.
"Two inside sources from SETI" have confirmed this information. Efforts are being made to get one of the sources (a senior official) to go public with this information.
Since the beginning of the reception of these signals, a human force has attempted to "jam" these transmissions.
This statement was made by Dr. Greer as early as May of this year. He has added that these signals are without a doubt "extraterrestrial."
SETI has denied that an extraterrestrial signal has been received.

SETI URGED TO FESS UP OVER ALIEN SIGNALS

Monday 31st July 2006 23:30 GMT Alien hunters today pounded the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute here with e-mails and phone calls, following claims made this weekend that the organization has covered up the detection of signals from space.
Allegations of a SETI cover up were made last night on the fringe-friendly Coast to Coast radio show hosted by Art Bell. During the broadcast, professional SETI watcher Steven Greer, the CEO of Space Energy Access Systems, claimed that insiders told him that SETI discovered a high concentration of signals from space, and that another organization stepped in to block those signals. SETI, however, maintains that it has not seen any signals of note.
According to Greer, the space communications have caused a major stir at SETI, which hunts for intelligent life in outer space.
"They have had numerous extraterrestrial signals," Greer said, during the radio broadcast. "They were apparently searching in a spectrum or in an area ... where they hit the mother-load. The signals were so numerous that they began to have their systems externally jammed by some sort of human agency that did not want them to continue receiving those signals."
And where did Greer get this fantastic information? Apparently, from a well-known source within SETI.
"This person, if I were to say who he is, almost every one your listeners would probably known the name," Greer said.
Bell's Coast to Coast show is famed for dealing with matters that many would consider far from reality. The radio host has enjoyed a phenomenal career discussing ghosts, UFOs and things that go berserk in the night with an eclectic set of guests. But it's worth noting that Bell, who only hosts the show on the weekends now, and regular host George Noory often break stories such as the Dubai ports deal well before the national media.
That's not the case this time around, according to SETI.
"There's been nothing like that at all," said a spokesman, who described Greer, as "the bane of SETI's existence."
Greer runs a SETI rival, if you will, called CSETI and often claims that SETI is withholding evidence of alien life from the public. His comments triggered a torrent of e-mails and phone calls to hit SETI today, according to the SETI spokesman.
In this particular instance, the fine people at SETI seem a bit more tethered to the reality spectrum. Greer, after all, relied almost exclusively on hearsay in his discussion with Art Bell. In addition, Greer claimed that members of SETI were in on some type of conspiracy to keep alien life secret while at the same time being attacked by a third party trying to block alien signals from SETI. That's an awful lot of maneuvering - most of which makes little sense.
That said, technophiles should enjoy guessing who Greer's secret source might be.
Back in the day, SETI had serious backing from one of HP's early employees - Bernard Oliver. Over the years, the organization has received funds from such Silicon Valley institutions as NASA Ames, HP, Sun Microsystems, and the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation. Microsoft co-founder and space buff Paul Allen is also a major SETI backer.

ONTARIO MINE MAY HOLD CLUES TO MARS LIFE

University of Toronto professor digs for micro-organisms two kilometers deep in Timmins. Her work could yield the secret of life on other planets
Rather than looking into deep space, a University of Toronto professor has taken the search for the secret of alien life to the depths of a Timmins mine. Geologist Barbara Sherwood Lollar has received funding from NASA and the Canadian Space Agency to study how life might exist on other planets, but she believes the secret may be found underground.
"What they are interested in is the area of extraterrestrial life," Sherwood Lollar says. "We study the Earth to understand what it might mean for the exploration of other planets."
Sherwood Lollar's research takes her two kilometers below the Earth's surface, where she collects water samples from cracks in the rock. There is life in the water — microbes that could hold the clue to survival on other planets.
It was often thought that nothing could live deep underground. Plants need photosynthesis, a process that requires the sun, and other organisms eat the plants to get energy, Sherwood Lollar notes. These microbes are able to survive without sunlight — a trait they might share with life forms in space.
"NASA and the Canadian Space Agency believe that if they find life on other planets, it will look like this," she says.
Microbes are minute living beings, too small to be seen by the human eye. Bacteria are a common type of microbe, also known as a micro-organism.
The water running through the cracks in the rocks of the copper and zinc mine in Timmins is 10 times more salty than seawater because it has been interacting with the rocks for up to 3 billion years. This groundwater makes a delicious beverage that is a favorite of microbes. "Microbes aren't stupid, they're going for the jelly doughnut every time," and turning the hydrogen in the water into energy, Sherwood Lollar says.
The water also contains methane — a gas that is found on Mars. Sherwood Lollar studies the amount of gas in the water — gases produced by the microbes.
Methane found in the atmosphere of Mars may have been produced by microbes, suggesting there could be life on the red planet, says Martin Lebeuf, a manager of space sciences at the Canadian Space Agency.
NASA reports the average surface temperature on Mars is -53C. Due to the cold conditions water cannot remain in a liquid state, but it may exist below the surface, Lebeuf says. It is thought that microbes can live below the surface of Mars at points where the ice goes deep enough to be warmed by magma, a hot fluid or semi-liquid material that erupts as lava. Atmospheric radar will be used by NASA to find spots where the ice and magma meet.
"It is exciting because this is essentially a sort of rehearsal for what scientists will some day do on Mars, either robotically or in person," Lebeuf says in an email from the remote Haughton Mars Project Research Station in Nunavut where he's working. "This work will ultimately help to answer the fundamental question, `Are we alone in the universe?'"
The Kidd Creek mine in Timmins is a perfect place to study this phenomenon, notes Sherwood Lollar, because the mineshaft allows relatively easy access to the underground water. She's quick to credit staff at Kidd Creek who have been very accommodating in granting her access to the mine, where she's been conducting research throughout her 10 years at the U of T. Sherwood Lollar notes that, without the co-operation of mine workers, it would be almost impossible to conduct this type of study, since there is no other way to get access to rocks two kilometers underground.
She and her team of researchers also have been studying a mine in Thompson, Man., in their overall project, which has been funded by NASA since 2004 and was given a boost this spring from a Canadian Space Agency grant.
Mines in New Zealand, Finland and South Africa also have been used, but the Canadian Shield is an ideal Petri dish.
"Canada is a perfect place to conduct this research," Sherwood Lollar says.
"The world is coming here to do science."
This contribution could give Canada a more active role in space missions. Sherwood Lollar, for example, has been participating in planning for future missions to Mars.
Lebeuf is also excited about the potential that Sherwood Lollar's research holds for science in this country. When international organizations such as NASA fund Canadian projects and come here to study, it allows the country to showcase what it can offer to the investigation of space.
"Ultimately, this may help to position Canada as a major player in future international exploration missions to Mars and elsewhere," Lebeuf says.
